My guess is it may be normal intake/turbo noise that’s concentrated externally near your cab’s A-pillar. Normally those noises are relatively unnoticed b/c the intake is buried under the hood/hood silencers, or diluted by proximity to other noise makers, like the direct injectors or fans.

Because it’s mostly an esthetic flourish, I’d bet there’ll be basic delete kits offered where people can keep the look w/o the noise.

Fake snorkel/"clean air intake". But at least you got that 1700lb payload that Sheldon promised.

I wouldn't go deeper than the hybrid batteries under the rear seat.

I love the silly snorkel and the sound.

So, I know it’s a RAI, but does it deal at all against water?

I was able to eliminate about 1/2 of the sound by removing that downward facing cover on the Airbox under the hood. It's almost bearable... I'll keep an eye out for other solutions in the coming weeks/months... Shannon

Trailhunter is not rated to ford water any higher than any other Tacoma. But I’d rather have the RAI if crossing water just for the splash insurance.

    Far to much money spent.
I opened the air box removed the rubber plug and sealed off the snorkel whatever clean air exit. no more annoying sound, and mean from the passenger princess not the truck :)

I agree, it sounds exactly like I would expect to me (or how it would on a larger truck)

Yeah the splash insurance is great. Going to have a really hard time vacuuming splashed water into the intake in a large puddle when the main intake is so far up. Water might run in to the box when parked or slow driving through water, but even a bad splash will just bounce off since there is no appreciable head pressure.

I’m with TacoRancher… I love the sound. The way the turbo and electric motor interact on the hybrids makes feels like I’m driving a little diesel :)… it compares to the feel of my last 3.0L diesel ram 1500 lol.

How sealed off /water tight is that? Guess I’ll look for myself when my truck is back from PPF.

How common is the misconception that a snorkel is meant for water crossings when all it does is move the air intake higher up for driving on dusty roads. Most require a kit to properly seal them if you plan to use them in water crossings.

Im fully aware. Thats why I call it an RAI because snorkel is the wrong word. But it does not mean that an RAI does not have some benefit for water crossings, especially when sealed like you mention. That’s why I’m asking how sealed it already is.

I would like to point out that ‘snorkel’ is called a snorkel because it suits the purpose… I dont think anyone here claimed this raised intake was for water crossings other than those who weren’t aware thats all it was.
Sealed or not, a raised, rear-facing intake, in particular, reduces the risk of contamination (water, dust, or otherwise)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one from factory that’s legitimately watertight. The one on the 70 series that I used to own in Australia was only rated for dust but I think there was an aftermarket kit you could buy for it.
