    Seems pretty big for a 3-ton compressor…

I'd quit cutting the condenser coils like that. It's just extra work and you are losing material. I cut the ends off like you, but then just fold them over on themselves and stand on them to flatten them.

Even the Trane Aluminum Climatuff coils since the Aluminum just sheds everywhere when you cut it.

    Good haul though.

Last pic was best to work on with big door, but Those second pic units were tough suckers and ran fairly well IMO.

Charlie, next time I'm at my storage I'll take a pic of my pile. It's a combination of junked units and cardboard boxes/trash.

Everything I install comes in a cardboard box and styrofoam, it really adds up after a few jobs. Cardboard is no big deal as I recycle that at the public dumpsters, but the stupid styrofoam is super irritating to deal with.

I generally do not, but I didn’t feel like making two trips and I had to maximize space in the bed of the truck; I got $166 for the whole load!

I have been hoping for a 5-ton “stamped octagon” unit for quite a while! For you laypeople not in the know, five nominal tons (60,000 BTUs) is the largest size you can get in a residential central A/C or heat pump; I ended up scrapping everything from the 2-ton Rheem that I bought last May, except for the distinct and inimical fan grille, and my plan is to later make matching end tables with this Rheem fan grille and the Ruud fan grille that my barber gave me back in 2011 when the unit at his barbershop died…

As for this unit, it is the best choice for a coffee table/end table/ storage box because it is biggest you could get. My dad will not let me stash anymore HVAC parts at his house, and my friend Gwyn isn’t big on it either. So, my girlfriend Amanda (@Stitchgirl90) wants a new TV stand. She is fine with using the shell of this old Ruud air-conditioner as one so I have an excuse to keep it in her room. We will not turn it into a storage box yet, as that will require a bit of work, but my plan for the short term is to disassemble the cabinet and yank all the valuable guts out; I will then bring the cabinet up to Amanda’s bedroom piece by piece, and reassemble it in her room. Amanda’s landlady has no problem with us bringing the shell of a central air-conditioner into her house. I have to drive to Jersey to pick up the unit, but I negotiated the seller down to $50 and once I get the copper and shit out of the unit, I expect to clear anywhere from $100 to $150 in profits once I scrap everything!

    More power to you man.
I wouldn’t disassemble that behemoth and lug it in to a house. Does the land lady know how big that thing is?

She didn’t seem to be intimidated by a 2-ton version of the same unit. Amanda’s landlady loves projects like this and even provides materials for mine and Amanda’s endeavors.

    @Lt. Dangle

So, the seller of Ruud has apparently had a lot of people flake out on him; I messaged him last night saying I would come get it on Monday if he took $50. He was initially very uppity and insisted that I come get it today; I told that I could not get it this weekend because I have a full-time job and work both Saturday and Sunday. I told him that I was serious about buying it as long he took fifty bucks for it, and that I have a pickup truck that can easily accommodate the unit.

I go to get it it on afternoon, and I’m hoping that it will be Amanda’s new coffee table by Monday evening (I previously misspoke and said it was going to be a TV stand)!

Do you have a piece of glass to set on top of it?
Seems like the cooling fins would be a nuisance.
    Stuff falling inside.....

We have done a few foot pedal sewing machine conversions. But never an HVAC unit.

If you mean the condenser, that is one of the most valuable bits and will be getting scrapped…

No. I mean the slots in the top of the unit.

That is the fan grille; we will source a piece of glass somehow…
