This is a rare 2.7l engine for Toyota so finding a replacement engine doesn't seem possible. I'm trying to find out who to have rebuild mine.
    Can anyone help?

    What's special compared to a regular 3RZ?

    Nothing.

If you build it just like any other 3RZ.

@Speedytech7 knows more about the "differences". But the differences don't make it "rare or special".

Pretty sure that's just a regular 2000 3RZ, the characters after that don't make much difference. The only big differences between the years are the ignition systems. 95-97 are distributor and it has a different head without provision for the cam sensor since it is in the dizzy. 98-04 use the same head but 01-04 use a different valve cover for the coil on plug ignition.

    Don't 98-00 use the 8-port intake head while 01-04 use 4-port intake?

From what I've read they're interchangeable as long as you bring the intake manifold along with, but it's a bit misleading to call them the same.

No, it's even muddier than that. You can use either manifold on either head as long as you use the right gasket for that head. Also the years on that aren't cut and dry because Cali spec trucks screw that all up

What I do know is that this engine does not have coil on plug ignition, it has 2 ignition coil packs. 1 for cylinders 1 & 2, the other for cylinders 3 & 4. It does have the 8 port intake head. When I said this engine is "rare" its because (from what I've been told) Toyota used this setup 1 out of every 10 2.7l engines. The 10 they used is the 3rz and the 1 being this E3RZ-N73. Also due to this configuration the ECU is completely different, so it's not a simple swap. This is why I'm looking for a good rebuilder.
I really do appreciate all the input all of you have shown me! Thanks!

I'm sure you could order a rebuilt engine from Yota1 or Sunwest that will work for a wasted spark ignition engine like yours. That engine is plenty common enough, any 8 port head with a cam sensor hole is what you need. Most 98-00 heads will be like that unless it was a California model.

E3RZ-N73 is the first 3rz's that came out in 4runners/tacomas...

    95 to some 97's....

The head will have no cam sensor hole like later ones...

aftermarket heads only differ by 4 port vs 8 port,
and are backward compatible by plugging the cam sensor hole....

and usually have the distributor hole open,
which you have to freeze plug it to use in later trucks....
or buy the o-ring plug from LCE.

Your engine harness dictates which configuration.

I believe the 8 ports were used upto the 99's....
    4 after.....

And its very common to buy these with swapped out engines.....

so even the harness may not be original.......

So you have to match the current harness

my 98 started with 2rz........then it went 3rz.....
    now we're back to 2rz........same ecm/harness
