Not that this will make anyone feel any better - but the bed quarter panels are aluminum so there should never be any rust .. but I get the main issue is aesthetic and I want to prevent it as well

I’m just hoping the PPF protects it enough. Eventually I’d like to run +25 285-75-17’s. I’m almost certain mudguards have to come off the front to run that size so it’s not looking good for me lol. Hopefully my sliders will stop the rocks

I'd like to see Toyota get away from the parking sensors on the Tralhinter. Make it an option to delete them.

The majority of the tire is exposed on the 4G. Larger flares might help but those don't follow the lines of the truck. I look at it like drive it on asphalt or live with paint chips.

I noticed some damage to my PPF in the area you are discussing. Right rear quarter panel. My immediate suspicion was someone messed with it at a parking lot. Looks more like knife like cuts than chips. But that really doesn't make sense as there is vast huge areas they could have tampered with. I only ran through a muddy/rocky area of my local park briefly and my sides are splattered. Looks like the new normal.

With my bigger tires and what I want to do with it, I am SOL in protecting stuff AND doing stuff. If you remain with the stock tires hopefully there will be better mud flap options out there soon.

The first thing I did with my 5' bed was cover this area with PPF. The stuff isn't magic to work with, $30 from Amazon.

This thread actually had me searching for options and Rokblokz has an option for people that run bigger tires. It looks like it would work since it’s mounted outside the wheel well

Don't they use that stiff plastic stuff that doesn't really bend? My factory mudflaps could almost double over easily. Too bad they are so skinny.

They say it’s flexible but I have no experience with them. I’m just wondering if it can handle beginner/moderate trails without breaking

My trailhunter came with ppf from dealer installed bottom front of back wheel. Did yours not come with anything ?? Could be a long bed issue. You can see the line where the ppf ends on the panel

I also removed all mud flaps. Don’t like them for off-roading

Mine took a beating (short box) far worse than the op’s. Ark mudflaps helped but didn’t solve the problem. RCI rock sliders with top plates was my fix. Before and after touch up.

I agree it’s a problem solved by running board style sliders or boards themselves. My huge rokblokz didn’t stop the rocks, you can hear the running boards getting pelted with rocks. This is on my tundra that is well documented for having this issue as well. Reminds me of the last generation Nissan frontier. The pro 4x was terrible for this issue.

PDKtaco yeah that damage looks the same as mine, I can see your pitted flare too.

This wasn’t intended as a ‘I need help to prevent the damage’ thread, it was an ‘I drove my truck on gravel twice after buying, and it’s already chipped to shit’. What gives? Again, I haven’t been driving the speed limit.

I shouldn’t be a need to spend $1000 on ppf, $500+ on mud flaps, $1500-2000 on running boards, just to be able to drive on maintained gravel roads/gravelled secondary highways a couple times without pitting up the paint and trim on a $90 000 truck. ‍ (Canadian prices).

For the record, i had already spent $1000 on ppf on the truck on day 1.5 of ownership (windshield, front of hood, mirrors and other front end), with a booking to get the majority of the rest of the truck wrapped on my first day back from a 2 week work trip, and ordered mud flaps (Rally armor flaps for the curious, similar to rokblokz but more flexible, in 2 configurations even), and greenlane offroad hybrid sliders (with top plate and kick out). I didn’t expect my paint and flares to get wrecked after this minimal exposure. Again not off reading, not being an idiot, not even doing the speed limit, driving on normal gravel roads.

This isn’t about me being told to ‘live with the chipping’… I’ve driven trucks all my life, thats not the problem. The problem is this truck got chipped to absolute shit with me babying the driving more than i ever have with any other truck, and it happened immediately after my first and second drives on gravel roads. I have since been doddling along at 1/3rd the speed limit to prevent any further obliteration of the paint and flares until i get home, but it’s just silly.

I suspect the long box is more of an issue, but PDKtaco’s truck shows the same damage, so perhaps driving scenarios contribute as well.

The tiny PPF patch that came on the truck from factory/distributor is far smaller than some of the others posted here. But again this isn’t covering the full range of the chipping.

I presume its possible that the ‘strike’ marks on the ppf would be differently shapen than the chips in the paint due to different material properties?

How far up should I go with the PPF to prevent this? To the gas cap maybe? And did you get damage on the other side of the fender near the tailgate or just near the cab as in the photo? Was the cab itself also chipped?

I think we all agree it’s bullshit that it’s happening. I just want to learn from everyone so I can put a bandaid on the issue (ppf) until I can work out a longer term solution (kick out rail / better flaps).

I agree it sucks! The gen 4 Tacoma rear fenders are definitely rock magnets! I spend a lot of time on gravel roads. Winters here can be brutal, lots of sand is used on the roads. My 2013 Tundra was pretty peppered front to back running boards helped keep the sides clean. No matter what you drive on gravel roads it’s going to get beat up. I’ve had the sliders for about a month and haven’t seen any new chips, you can find decent running boards for 1/2 the price that will work just as well but after tearing up 2 sets on my Tundra I just spent the coin and got the sliders.
