255/85 R16 Owners Experience

I had no change in mine going from 265/75r16 KO2s to 255/85r16 Falken AT4Ws, but when you have the aerodynamics of a brick wall and have hundreds of pounds of armor and tents hanging on, the tires take a back seat. I get my usual 13.5 mpg before and after.

 

You can cut the factory tabs and grind /file buff smooth...a 285/75/16 will fit ..I installed a 255/85/16 bfmt I had to deflate a little air ...kick it into place with h a few curse words ... how do you.like the atw4 in that size ? ???

 

I am running some yoko goo3 's 255/85/16 ... changing from a bf ko3 285/75/16.. I am considering thev255/85/16 atw4 ...

PROS
lighter than 285
More power to the wheels faster
I can feel my gears more 6spd
Mt great offroad .gravel roads 60mph no problem
Great turn radius

CONS
Mt's are not great road tires
Steery keep your hands at 10-2 ..no tx or on the phone after 60mph on hwy ..
mountain turns at 6% are not there friend ...
They are more sensitive to PSI and should be checked if doing long road days

summary
i like the benifits of the 255/85/16 tire size . And probably will no return to the 285/75/16 size .
I will most likely change my wheels F5's or te37 - offset with atw4 255/85/16 ...will still be 2lbs lighter

 

I found something my 255/85/16 AT4w's don't completely excel at: deep, loose sand. But then again, I figured that...a wider tire would be needed to 'float' better.

 

I've never even almost got stuck (Toyo muds)

 

I bit the bullet and have it on a hitch-swingout now. I love the AT4W! The 33s beat the shit out of my 265s, I can feel the truck going over obstacles so much easier and I was able to get past a spot where I bottomed out my frame and sliders before. The C-rated AT4Ws ride so much nicer than my E-rated KO2s, but I feel that they don't do quite as well in sand. Overall, I really like the change and I havent experienced too many negatives!

 

Can you elaborate on “don’t do quite as well in the sand” @PilotBoy352 ? Like sand isn’t your norm or what’s your overall comparison to the opinion.

 

When I'm wheeling through washes (theres a huge one that is my usual wheeling grounds) they seem to slip more than my old tires. They still do really well, but they like to spin just a bit.

I just switched to 255/85/R16 Falken Wildpeak AT4s from some 235/85/r16 KO2s. I've got about 500 miles on the AT4s, immediate impression seems to be a better ride.

 

That's because the are C rated instead of E rated. Same switch for me, and the smoother, quieter ride is definitely a plus.

 

They are still just as heavy as the E rated tires though. That's why I switched to 265/75/16 after owning 255/85/16 Cooper ST MAXXs for 10 years. Glad to hear the Wildpeaks ride smoother though.

 

I believe it. It's a hefty bitch to lift up onto my swingout.

 

Sorry if mentioned elsewhere but are you on stock suspension? Any updates on rubbing? And what brand are your rain guards - weathertech? Beautiful rig

 

I was on Icon 2.5 coilovers in the front, a 2" lift leaf pack and Icon 2.0 remote resi shocks in the rear. All in, she was pretty level at about 1.5-2 inches of lift. I did slice and dice the rear part of the plastic fender and it quieted all the rubbing.

She's gone now, but I'm going to be lifting my new 3rd gen and putting the same wheels and tires on it, so I will report back.

 

Another happy 255/85r16 owner here. Falken Wildpeak AT4W. 2 inch suspension from Dobinson's and 1 inch Toytec body lift (I know, a volatile subject. Just sharing my results). Stock SR5 wheels from the end of the 3rd gen run (the nicer, black version)

AT4W's on for a week and already tested in 3 inches of sloppy, wet snow at 34 degrees F. Performed perfectly fine if you drive like a grownup, but not as good as the true winter tires I had on my Subaru.

overall very happy with the tires, and great service as always from Discount Tire.

 

Lifted my new 3rd gen and moved my 255/85r16 Falken AT4Ws on my TX Baja wheels to it. Looks freaking amazing, and I am so excited to continue building this new truck!

 

Does anybody who’s gone to 255/85/16 regret not moving up to 255/80/17? Not because of tire selection. But out of concern for the amount of sidewall on the 16” version?

I haven’t really heard any downsides to the 255/85/16 (other than limited tire options). But I want to rule out a better experience on 17’s. Of course, it’s hella pricey to change both at the same time.

 

What is your concern about the amount of sidewall?

 

The extra sidewall is the reason I went this route. Aired down in the dirt is night and day better.
