Yeah I will say that’s really lame to leave customers hanging like that on a brand new truck with a known issue that literally could leave you in the middle of nowhere. Thousands of people

i'm not here to carry water for some multi billion dollar corporation. But...

What were they supposed to do?

    A. They can ignore the problem. That's why you have a warranty. Suck it. Let every customer fight tooth and nail and every dealer fight to get a new transmission.

    B. Internally acknowledge the problem. But not put out a TSB. a quiet TSB if you will. The dealer says "I got this trouble code." Toyota says no problem, sending you a transmission and torque converter.

    C. Issue TSB, which is a public document, and everyone gets spazzed.

    D. Offer a recall for all affected VINs thus guaranteeing your truck will be out of service for 0 to 6 months waiting on parts. And then you get to fight for rental car reimbursement, lemon law, all that. And until your recall gets fixed, you're going to get low balled by every dealer and prospective buyer because it has an open recall.

some years ago I had a car that had a casting defect in the engine block. The block would randomly crack. I got the notice in the mail. if it happens, up to eight years past the manufacturing date or 10 years or whatever, it'll get replaced.

The car has 200,000 miles over 16 years on it. Despite having this questionable engine block casting.

because, similar to the transmissions, it probably didn't affect every single vehicle. and by the way, that casting defect was attributed to "debris."

at the end of the day, what cannot be changed must be endured. I get being mad. But just drive the truck. And if it fails, you'll get a new transmission. if it's a once in a lifetime trip, pick up some travel insurance.

Quiet tsb’s are for real! Aunt just had a Prius throw a p3004 only the dealer could find. 12 year old car was still under warranty , that was recently extended to 15 years unknowingly to her, by Toyota. Toyota footed the bill and gave her a rental free of charge.. the service writer didn’t know there was a tsb for that death code.

There's a class action suit on GM because they ignore the problem.

Really...?! so they know that there's a possibility of worse f up situation but it's not a standard recall to examine each vehicle. Good luck with that everybody!

I saw some speculation that 24 Tundras might get recalled. IDK if that will happen or not. I was thinking what if Toyota continues to build Tundras only to recall them at a latter date? Presuming there isn't a fix, and the new motors are still defective.

My concern if they recall the Tundras, that will put more work on dealers and affect Tacoma repairs and also their loaner vehicle supplies.

I was under the impression that they're confident that they've solved the root cause with the engines in the Tundra. It was casting debris from improper cleaning after some part of the block machining process. If they're cleaning the metal chips and casting sand out now and there's nothing else fundamentally wrong with the design, it should be fine. I can say that it's interesting that they've had two major issues with suppliers not cleaning parts properly in just a few years and I wonder if it's just plain bad luck or a symptom of something else in the industry.

As for a recall, I think the argument can be made that engines that have a potential to seize up on the highway are a safety issue and that they probably should be recalled. I haven't heard anything about the US NHTSA talking about recommending — they can't actually force — Toyota do a recall. I haven't paid much attention because I don't have one and don't particularly care, but the fact that I know as much as I do about it means that there's at the very least a lot of smoke surrounding it. You know what they say about smoke regarding fires, though you probably also know what they say about cliches.

That should be far easier than when the Toyota dealers went through the frame swap on the Taco's

On top of that, a recall for the Tundra very likely isn’t going to be “all Tundras get an engine swap.” It’ll likely be a fairly narrow VIN range based on their analysis of where the failures actually came from. It probably won’t be unmanageable. If it is, we’ll just have to deal like we do with any other thing in life. On the bright side, Toyota has a fairly good track record of doing the right thing by their customers, so even if things do go sideways, we have a much higher probability of having a satisfactory outcome. Many manufacturers would just tell us to take a flying leap.

At present I believe the recall on the Tundra applies to 98,568 and has been issued, until further directed it will be a engine replacement for those 98,568. Rumor has it, it could become a 20 year warranty unlimited mileage on the engine...I don't believe the rumor as the Tundra recall is a safety recall.
