Between the shutters and the coolant control valve it does indeed warm up fast. The Camry has a similar setup (despite an electric water pump) and it warms up really fast as well. They do all that mostly for emissions.

And that's why so many 4th gens were on "quality hold". My truck was a 1/24 build, but didn't get to the dealer until April. It was the first issue that popped up, but they quickly figured that one out.

I would think it's the heat from the exhaust-driven turbocharger, but if that heat's diverted into the cabin, the 4-banger should last longer. I've heard about a kid with a WRX-STI replacing his turbo that was wearing out with a bigger turbo... More power for deeper snow, I suppose, without increasing the ground clearance? The old air-cooled VWs were great winter rigs, "the poor man's jeep" that would go nearly anywhere, except when snow would pile up under the body pan, lifting the Beetle or Squareback above the road surface... :tumbleweed:

I do notice a design flaw nobody is talking about; heat soak. I notice when it's hot out (90°+) and you have been driving for a while there is a noticeable power loss. I would love to see some of the data the engine is getting. Pretty sure it's pulling timing due to knock. I guess I'll need to up it to premium in the hot months :annoyed:

I think he may also sneak out to international waters from time to time in his boat. Lawless out there!

I've never had the opportunity to see those in person. On rare occasions I hear they do creep southward some. But not this far down. They're beautiful

I was just going to suggest 91+. The timing should advance.

But I wouldn't necessarily call it a design flaw. More like engine protection. Knock and lean conditions are the death forced induction engines. Timing pulls and richness are probably programmed in.

Yeah. And they say this one could be much worse as it's going to actually cross the state as opposed to just running up the coast :(
