Truck will be going in to Discount Tire tomorrow to get a new set of tires installed. My BFG KO2s were incredible, but they're starting to cause a lot of vibration in the truck & I'm having a slow leak in one that I cannot find for the life of me, so I decided new it was time for something new.

After tons of research and never truly coming to a singular "best" option, I opted to try a set of Goodyear Wrangler Territory MTs in 285/70R17s. My logic to buy these tires as well as sticking with the same size was for a few primary reasons:

1. These tires are ran on many OEM trucks, including the Ram TRX, Ford Bronco, Chevy Colorados / Silverados, so this gives me confidence in their engineering
2. They are light as a feather. The 285/70R17s (C1 load rating) are 48 lbs. By comparison, my current BFG KO2s (C1 load rating) are 52 lbs and I thought they were the lightest on the market. The new Falken AT4Ws in 285/70R17 (load rating C1) are 65.4 lbs!
   • Given how light these are, I was interested in how much they weighed in at for a 315/70R17 since going to 35s is a long term goal. For a C2 load rating, they weigh in at 55lbs!! Absolutely incredible given a vast majority of 35s are weighing in at ~65 lbs, with 62lbs being the previously lightest I had found.
3. I stuck w/ my same tire size since I am getting married soon & don't have the cash to throw at running 35s currently. Another reason to stick with the 33s was that I am hoping to upgrade to the Bilstein 8100s after the wedding and having less unsprung weight will be a huge benefit.

 

Nice synopsis, though I will throw in a vote (that you didn't ask for) to not upgrade to 35's. I just spent 8 days in the Swell, doing trails that make most of Moab seem like a cakewalk in comparison, and I'm on 33's. One of the guys was even running 31's.

The drawbacks for 35's are too substantial relative to their mediocre, if any, benefits. 33's are that sweet spot for almost all folks. That next level of driving (i.e. harder, more technical trails), requires a lot more than just the 35's. Speaking from first hand knowledge here, having seen loads of money get washed right down the drain.

 

What's up Mike - appreciate the perspective! I see your point for sure. I do agree that 33s are the sweet spot on these third gens. I am jealous of the new fourth gen guys & gals being able to fit 35s without much work whatsoever. I've even seen a few guys who have put on 37s without much sweat, which is cool.

@Discount Tire got the Goodyear Wrangler Territory MTs installed today and I think they look great!

Looking good!! The tread pattern on these looks like they'd be better than most other MTs in the snow since they have more blocks with sipes. Shoulder lug spacing is definitely wider for mud evacuation, but those center 3-4 blocks are a lot tighter.

 

good on ya for sticking with a light tire! most people dont pay attention to tire/wheel weight when deciding on a tire to run. Rotational mass matters and running a heavy wheel and tire package will make your truck drive worse in every way.

I can’t 100% confirm but I’ve been seeing that the MT might actually stand for Maximum or Multi Terrain, which may explain why it doesn’t look like a typical mud terrain.

 

Yeah man, so stoked about the low weight of the tires. I feel like I can already tell the weight difference b/w these and my KO2s, but that is probably just placebo

 

It’s probably not a placebo. I can feel wheel/tire weight mostly in the steering. But it definitely feels lighter with a lighter setup

 

Got out to explore some of the fall colors this weekend near Buena Vista. We were able to take a nice 7 mile hike up to Ptarmigan Lake and camped at a couple of our favorite campsites.

Took a quick "solo" camping weekend (Theo tagged along, of course) out near Fraser, CO. I almost always rely on my Colorado Funtreks books to scout new areas, since they highlight both campgrounds and dispersed sites. I’ve found their books to be the most efficient and reliable way to discover new spots, especially when camping is involved. I usually start with their trail overviews, then do some quick Googling or check AllTrails for more details on the trails, campsites, or just the area in general.
