Looking for some suggestions. I have a double wide front door that I would like to repaint. The old paint is horrible, and has been partially peeled off due to something being taped to front door which pulled off a patch of paint, and so I would like to remove the old paint before repainting. What is the best way to remove old paint from a solid wooden door? How can this be done, and, if I remove the door for stripping and painting, how should I handle my front door while working on the door so I can effectively keep bugs and all the mosquitos out? TIA for any suggestions. Looks like @TomTwo has repainted his door quite nicely, but not sure if that job included stripping a previous coat of paint off... And what is the best most durable paint to use on a front door?

Thanks. I got my chainsaw sharpened and prestarted it to confirm its working, so it's sitting on the ready to take care of the after math. That is, if the after math is small enough for me to handle.

I'm partial to Sherwin Williams. An exterior Acrylic Latex (SuperPaint/Duration) would be ideal. I prefer to spray doors vs brush, but Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is designed to be brushed and dry without brush strokes. I've used it with good results.

A satin sheen would help with durability. Sherwin Williams paint tends to have slightly more sheen than other brands sheens in my experience.

As far as prep, lots of options to strip. Check out the paint isle at Home Depot. It's going to make a huge mess and would be easer to remove the doors and set on saw horses in an area you don't care about. Wear gloves/mask. A metal putty knife will help.

3m Handmasker with 3m plastic (masking film) to tape off the door entrance.

I'd probably lightly scuff with 320 or maybe 220 after stripping the old paint, then prime, then paint.

Hey @MGMDesertTaco , thanks, Yeah it is the front door, may as well use the best paint. Satin sounds good to me.

I could do one door at a time, rather than both at once, what do you think of that? Prep is the most important part of the repainting, so I'll see what the ol' HomeDepot has. I would probably use a gallon of stripper, and would scrape it all off into a garbage can with a trashbag to keep clean up minimal. Would still be messy though or would have the potential. Gloves, masks would be required for retaining hand skin and sinus material. I got the metal putty knife. All the nooks and crannies of the door is what worries me, the flat areas would be well handled by the putty knife, I do have OCD on these type of jobs, maybe a new fresh putty knife with sharp corners would help get those nooks and crannies [i'm thinking english muffins now.].

Good idea on the gaping front door, I was thinking of sourcing and cutting to size some cardboard and then taping that into place of the door, plastic sheeting sounds easier and as effective. How long do you think it will take, can I strip and paint, then rehang the door in one day? See, I was thinking I could do a door in one day so that I could have night time security with both doors on the hinges giving me peace of mind to be able to sleep.

Red is a popular front door color, isn't it? Gads, it's going to take hours for me to pick a color. 220 grit, check.

If you have the time, get some paint stripper, sand paper, and add some elbow grease. I stripped several old solid wood doors in my last house because they had too many layers of paint previously applied to them, and I didn't want to add another. It was some real work, but I was quite please with the results.

It is going to take more than a day to do a door. Depending on what kinda of paint stripper you're able to buy in your state (they only sell the citrus stuff in CA now), it could take all day just to get paint off one side of the door. The citrus stuff- once applied, you gotta cover it asap with thin painters plastic. It stops working once it "dries", so the idea with the plastic is that it works longer- the process sucks.

When we started our remodel, we intended to strip, scrape, sand, prime, and repaint all our interior doors. We didn't even make it through one of them, I ended up just replacing them all. An exterior door is obviously more costly than that, and we did salvage the garage entry door, but I just went at that thing with a belt sander.

TLDR; You need more than a day per door. Citrus based paint strippers are time consuming.

A friend has a mid 1800s house with a brick chimney and it's got a much more extreme bend like that in the attic. Common in old homes - they called it a witches' crook.

Friendly reminder to lubricate your garage door with silicone. I didn’t realize how bad mine had gotten until my brother in law got out of my car and commented on how loud the door was. Huge before and after difference.
