Did my wife previous 4Runner . I heated up the leather cover with a good heat gun so it would stretch and I was able to get the edges where the stitching hole to actually touch but it totally sucked. It took me 3 days to get that damn thing to my liking. NEVER AGAIN!!! Good job.

I have tried rotopax, Jerry cans, and all sorts of other ways to make this work but I finally got it right!

We have a guy locally who does Amazon warehouse resales at auction. Starting bid is $1. So I put in for this 8 gallon water tank and got it for 80 bucks! It was brand new and never used. I used roof rack parts to make a shelf and I connected it to my Marine pump. The solution is awesome because the tank sits up high and out of the way and now I have 8 gallons to work with!

Thanks! Drug it back from Colorado, although I hope to get it (and myself) out of the rust belt soon..

Regarding the leafs - I haven't actually paid much attention to that! It does look like they may be. I've got 3G takeoff springs I am planning on putting on, but what was the TSB for?

We have different opinions about what constitutes "lightweight" that is sitting atop a vehicle.

1/2" Unitstrut weighs in at just under one pound per foot - 14.3 ounces to be exact.

There are seven (7) pieces of Unisturt on the roof of his cab. Five (5) of them are cross bars and look to be ~four (4) feet each.

    4' x 5' = 20 '

    20' x 14.3 oz. = 296.15 oz. / 16 oz. = 17.88 lbs.

Plus the two long bars that run the entire length of the cab (six [6} feet?).

    So, 6' x14.3 oz. = 85,8 oz. / 16 oz. = 5.36 lbs.

17.88 + 5.36 = 23.24 lbs. total, approximately, based on best guess of the length of the Unistrut.

I am told, and this could be wrong, that the manufactures gross weight limit for the roof of a 2nd gen Tacoma is 75lbs.

With his rack, he has given up 1/3 of the weight he can put on the roof.

I have never seen a roof rack make of anything other than aluminum, or composite materials, from an auto dealer or aftermarket seller; the above limit tells us why.

It will not take much to get 50 lbs. onto a rack (6 gallons of water is ~48 pounds).

My only concern here is safety; not just for the owner/operator of this vehicle and the passengers inside, but for all those on the road in his vicinity should the weight he has on his roof cause a failure that not only impacts him, but others on the road around him.

What will happen when a vehicle moving at 70+ MPH comes to a sudden, abrupt halt due to an accident? There is a reason they don't want more than 75 lbs. of weight on the roof.

I see too many vehicles, in the US of A, that people overload with no thought to the potential harm that may result not only to them, but to those around them, traveling at 70+ miles an hour on a highway.

My uncle drove his 2nd gen 450 miles to me with two 130lb tires strapped to the roof rack. Worked great!

You can strap anything you want on your roof. So can your uncle and anyone else on the planet.

But, that will have no impact on changing the laws of physics.
