    Our last couple weeks in Basic, we were marched to the main PX on base, and allowed to buy anything we wanted. Rather than marched to the "mini PX" to buy soap, tooth paste, deodorant,..... I bought a Pentax K100 35mm camera. Took lots of pics of my buddies. Things were much more relaxed, that close to graduation. we were actually allowed to move around and do mostly whatever we wanted to.

    The topography makes it look like summer camp! Very cool.

    Is that a bic lighter by his knee? I spent many nights in my dorm room with a lighter and some Kiwi polishing boots.

    Sharp eyes, have you. Yes indeed, many of us used that trick when polishing our boots. I tried it a couple times, but I didn't have the same results as others did.

    And who can forget the "Boot Black" service at airborne school? I still remember the platoon sergeant making a pitch for it right after the morning inspection on the Friday before Ground Week. And I remember the truth of his underlying message during Ground Week when pretty much everyone who opted not to use the service ended up doing morning PT in the gig pit for all of Ground Week.

    I did that back in the day, but didn't find that it helped all that much. I also tried putting shoe trees in my boots so I could polish ALL of the boot toe to a mirror finish.:D Didn't work out quite how I'd hoped it would. :facepalm:

    I never was able to get the true mirror finish.

    I must confess that in AIT (Advanced Individual Training), one of my Student Company Sergeants spilled the beans to some of us one day about how to "cheat". He mentioned a product called Leather Luster, it's like paint, but intended for leather shoes/boots. It dries in a hard, shiny finish. Does not crack in areas of the boot that bend when you walk. I took a taxi off base one weekend to the place he said he bought it, and picked up a can. It worked as advertised :D:bananadance:

    "Jody" :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

    I wonder - is "Jody" unique to the Army and Marines, or is he a part of folk lore in the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard as well??
