Garden of the gods is cool but very peopley. There’s way better places to spend time in Colorado.

it’s only 3 hours to sand dunes and you can do medano pass if you want to be adventurous

Yeah I expected this. It’s more just a stop along the way. I forgot I also learned I-25 South from Cheyenne to this point is no fun. CO drivers are as bad or worse than Chicagoland. Every third vehicle is a Tacoma or 4Runner though.

Yeah that section kind of sucks. The rest of the way down to El Paso is pretty sparse lol I spent way many hours driving around New Mexico when I do was doing consulting

Dunno where else you are heading on your trip but if you are in the area, this is a good place to spend a night. I found it randomly on my travels and have been back there a couple times. I’ve only ever seen one other vehicle there. I also think it’s way cooler than the South Dakota bad lands

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll add it to my list. Not sure I’ll get up to the NW corner of NM but ultimately headed to Las Cruces to see my family. Stopping at as many national parks, monuments, waterfalls, cool hikes and scenery as I can along the way. I haven’t done much of the stuff up in the Taos/Santa Fe area so planning to go through there either on the way down or back up (or both). Just going with the flow and floating on the wind. Currently just arrived at Florissant Natl Monument for more dinosaur bones.

I really should have kept a better record of my travels, there’s definitely some things I’ve forgotten that would be great to goto

everyone out there always told me toas is awesome but I never got around to going there.

Carlsbad caverns is pretty cool if you’ve never been. I’ve gone twice and did the hike in from outside both times.

white sands is cool for a bit. The loop hike is rough though. Don’t do that unless you like walking in sand for hours

One time on my way back I went abq to Durango, silver dollar highway up to montrose. Then hit black canyon and sand dunes on the way back east

also don’t stay in publeo Colorado. Made that mistake once. Thats one of the few places I’ve ever stopped that sketched me out

Parker Johns in Sheboygan on the riverfront.
The meal started out with deep fried pickle slices. The meal was burnt ends with potato slices, mac and cheese and corn bread.
    Very good.

We always do that section of I-25 south from Cheyenne to Denver or reverse first thing in the morning as you have noted the drivers are first class A-holes, bad or worse than Chicagoland indeed.

Thanks and no worries. So much to do out here I’ll never see it all in a lifetime but whatever I do find I’m grateful. Carlsbad Caverns are neat, took tons of cave pictures with a wide 12mm lens that worked great. Cops hit me with a speeding ticket, tacos are good there but will likely never go back. White Sands is always a good time even if it’s just a short sled ride down the dunes. With my foot how it is I’m not doing long backcountry stuff this time. Black Canyon I desperately want to make it back but not in the cards for this journey. Another trip I’ll have to do like two weeks Colorado only just to get good appreciation of it. Florissant National Monument closes at 4:30 so I didn’t have all the time today but it’s a neat place. Huge petrified redwood tree stumps, largest in the world possibly.

    IMG_8142.jpg

Pikes Peak in the distance looming over everything. Huge.

    IMG_8144.jpg

:hungry: Thanks I’ll take all of that! Will have to remember that’s in Sheboygan.

Oh man I had no idea. Worst part is I couldn’t even see the mountains. All covered in the same haze/smoke/sandstorm that’s been on me for days. Oh well, scenery for tonight is my very own private dispersed camp in the Pike National Forest near Lake George. Full LTE signal too! No fires but I have my iPad, think it’s time Verizon makes good on that “unlimited data”. Also can’t describe in words but the air is so freaking fresh here. What a contrast compared to sleeping on an interstate exit in a hotel parking lol LOL.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison? We camped at the remote north rim in June, breathtaking.

Yep and that’s where I wanted to camp. Last time I was there was 2016. Pulled into main visitor center lot and the only other vehicle was a news van, raising its mast getting ready to broadcast. Winds and clouds were picking up. Went inside and they said “storm of the year, you should leave.” They tried to send me over Monarch Pass and I thought better of it. Glad I did - one woman went up before they closed the gates and she isn’t around any more.

Usually when I miss a place with circumstances like that (not the dying part the freak weather part; which happens often due to the seat-of-my-pants nature of travel), I feel like there’s unfinished business. I’ll be back someday.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Me and my dad took rampart range road (which was awesome) and ended up in garden of the gods parking lot. There were so many people we didn't even park and just kept on driving. Also, pikes peak is a riot and definitely recommend everyone do it at least once.

I can't say it went without issue.
    1st time I tried. I got stuck in 4H. Didn’t even try 4LO.
Took the actuator all apart to find this funking thing was still lodged in the plug-in from the previous trucks wiring harness.20241012_040225.jpg
Actuator wasn't plugged in all the way. :anonymous:

Thanks to everyone who helped me get this resolved.
