I did Hot Springs AR for a NYE one year. It was a lot of fun, except that there's no party on NYE itself. We did a booze boat on Late Catherine for the midnight countdown, accompanied with a bunch of grouchy retirees. That bit is not recommended. But Hot Springs is fun for a weekend.

Other great new year's getaways- Texas hill country. Fredericksburg is getting horribly crowded and touristy, but the surrounding area is still a ton of fun. We did that last year. We camped in a weird ranch full of zebras and African wildlife, but walking distance to a saloon. This saloon, with a fire pit, a musical act, and a Greyhound bus full of goats. I mean, true Texas shit.

    Would do that again.

Or .. Charleston. That's NO, if NO were clean and full of rich people.

Hot Springs is desperately trying to become little Pigeon Forge these days. It's really ramped up on the themed restaurants and arcades.

Which is a shame, because the geology is irresistible to a rock hound.

But, they do have a brewery in one of the bathhouses, made using water from the springs. It's pretty dang good beer.

I swore I wasn't going to open one tonight, but that was calling my name.

    Color: uh...

Taste: definitely more of a dessert liqueur than a whiskey. But it's not a cheap one. This has a small bit of complexity. Pecan pie and toffee up front with distinct notes of caramel and very slight oak, and finishes with a strong appearance of cinnamon and maple. Has a leathery nose to it.

I don't normally appreciate the flavored sugar-whiskies, but this one is good.

    .. And it's dangerous. :drunk:

Amaretto mixed with bourbon is a deadly-good cocktail. Amaretto with a splash of cream soda is the nectar of Olympus.

I'll have to check the distribution radius of Blackland. just going by the name I'm assuming East Texas.

However, I'm never above swapping bottles by mail amongst enthusiasts.

:notsure: Jack Daniels distillery south of there is a cool/interesting tour. Always loved Gatlinberg, TN as a kid; went there a few times growing up. Always thought I'd like to go to Dollywood.
But Nashville is a big city with big city problems like they all have. Memphis is pretty crime ridden these days I hear, but Graceland we enjoyed tremendously; but we're both Elvis fans.
Full disclosure, I haven't been there in 30+ years. :notsure:

    I was disappointed in Lynchburg.

Previous job had me on a very interesting project with JD. That's not related. As a tourist, I was disappointed. Kentucky was more fun.

I always liked Memphis. There's lots to do there. And yeah, it's got crime. I wouldn't stay out more than a few hours after dark, and I'm sure as hell not closing down any bars there. But it's a fun place, and Beall Street has a lot of cool sounds going on.
