    This is my 28 Day Old Baby, with a front and back view of my rearview mirror. Don't mistake the garage door opener for controls on the bottom of the mirror. There are no controls on the mirror or any flip switch.

    So if this is the auto-dimming day-night mirror, I'm guessing it works like my photo-gray glasses that darken with the light. But even my glasses aren't dark all the time like the mirror. It does make driving at night hard and even difficult in the day as I don't seem to be able to see the details I'm used to with a regular mirror.

    I looked at the 2024 Tacoma eBrochure. I guess that’s the standard base OR mirror.

    If that is auto dimming based on rear traffic headlights, I don’t know how they are doing it. Could be a two way mirror with a hidden sensor, or using the rear facing backup camera. Just guessing.

    My digital mirror has a square sensor built into the bottom of the mirror frame.

    Yeah! I'm gonna get it check out to find out what's what. In any event, could it be switched out for the digital or no. Not saying I would. Just a thought.

    I would find out if you have a power pigtail for a homelink mirror. I believe all of the homelink mirrors have proper auto dimming for headlight beams.

    @CrispyTacoLover

    On the back of the mirror, there is a square indentation that might be a sensor, but I don't know.

    I saw that. Doesn’t do shit for traffic and headlights behind you.

    Yeah! Other than switching it out, I'm at a loss! Obviously it's useable but I just have never heard of having a mirror too dark!?

    Isn't tech such a wonderful thing?

    Too poor for mods
    I have the same mirror and it does auto dim without power somehow. I never noticed till it went dark during the day once. It hasn't dimmed again since I tinted the windows.

    Sagebrush, how well does the digital rearview mirror work with the SmartCap. I am considering getting one and would really like to have the dev function.

    autodimming can be turned on and off in the digital mirror. toggle through the settings within the mirror (which are documented horribly), where you can adjust up/down left/right positioning, whether it's regular or camera feed, whether it auto-dims or not (there'll be a 4 point star icon in the upper corner if auto-dim is active), etc.
    The sun with the A is for the regular optical mirror auto dimming, and the star looking thing is auto dimming for the digital mirror.

    tint could be impacting it, but also check your settings if you don't think it's working.

    You need the camera in the brake light above the back window to have a digital rearview (drv) camera. The bed camera is also located in there. You would have to relocate that camera to the back/top of the canopy to have a functional drv camera.

    This is an answer that was suggested to me and after some experiments it seems probable. Because the rear window is tinted, I guess dark enough, that is why the mirror seems dark. I turned the mirror over to the right to the passenger-side window and it looks fine. The rear window doesn't look that dark but I guess it is. That is how I bought it.
