OEM tailgate lock stopped working

I have the tailgate lock installed at the dealer when I bought my truck. It recently stopped working, so I went to the dealership and the guy at service told me it stopped working because my Toyota connect subscription expired. Has this happened to anyone else?

 

The dealership is giving you some BS. You don’t need the Toyota connect subscription to use the power tailgate lock.

 

This. I haven't had it for 2 years and my lock still works. Probably a failed actuator in the tailgate.

That said, once my Toyota Connect expired my remote start stopped working. Doesn't happen to everyone, but I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I never used it because of the annoying shut off issue, but it's dumb that it's a feature that they took away. Oh well, N2 does it better anyway.

 

That’s what I figured. I’ve heard bad things about this dealership in the past. I’ll call another dealership in the area and see what they say.

 

So this dealer is suggesting just the tailgate lock was disabled by the app? If the other locks work, this is just silly.

 

FWIW the lock wiring piggybacks the other lock signal and wiring. There would be no way to disable only that lock via the software, nor have I seen anything about it in Techstream. It doesn't even have its own fuse. Definitely a hardware issue.

 

I installed it myself and never renewed my toyota connect. They are lying, maybe theres a pinch wire somewhere.

 

Are you sure there is no fuse associated with the Toyota tail gate lock? I seem to recall some blocks wrapped in soft foam during my install years ago at the passenger kick panel. Didn't open the foam to see, but I assumed there were fuses as I saw no reason for relays at that location.

 

I don't remember any additional fuses when I installed mine. There were a few blocks but nothing that looked like it houses a fuse. It was all behind the kick panel though, would be easy enough to check.

 

The blocks in foam are the connectors to keep from rattling, unless something changes. There should be no fuses or relays, the actuator hooks straight into the power/ground circuits for the passenger door locks. It would run off of any stock power lock fuses.

edit: there are 2 fuses contrary to my recollection.

 

The first question to address is whether you can hear the actuator trying to engage.
If you can, it's probably a single screw (that may be rattling around inside the tailgate) that's easily re-installed.
If the actuator is not doing anything, it probably isn't getting power.

 

Mine quit working last year. The mechanical parts just needed cleaned in the tailgate. Just lay the tailgate down, remove the tailgate bed cover, and see if it's trying to actuate. I cleaned it with alcohol and then put lithium grease on it. Haven't had problem since.

 

I installed this on my '23 a few months ago. I believe there is an inline fuse in the wiring harness where it connects at the front left kick panel.

Huh. I wonder if it changed. I really don’t remember that on mine, but it also has been a while, and I could certainly be wrong. Even so, I don’t see much point to a fuse other than I guess downsizing it so that it will blow before the tailgate lock can blow any of the other doors fuses. That way you don’t lose your doors if something goes bad and shorts.

 

Mine doesn’t work either. When I checked it had a blown fuse. I disconnected the actuator and checked the wiring. Something is shorted to ground between the kick panel and the rear connector but haven’t had time to see where. Truck is still under warranty but I’d rather poke my eye with a stick than deal w the dealership which is literally at the entrance to my neighborhood.

 

Wait- ‘16 OR’s came with it? Aftermarket or OEM?

 

Just verified, there are two 7.5Amp fuses in the tailgate lock circuit. I imagine one for both of the leads to the tailgate lock since both go positive alternately to lock and unlock.

 

Got a link where I can get these? Mine just stopped working, again! This is the second time it dies on me. I took it about 1.5 years ago to the dealership and they fixed it but I don't know if it's still under warranty.

I'm unsure as to your request; Are you looking for a link to the fuses? If so, just take a blown fuse down to your local auto part store and they can find one off their shelves.
