It's ridiculously difficult to compare specs across the internet for all the various wheel & tire manufacturers. Wish somebody would create a crowdsourced database. In lieu of finding that, this is my quest:
Find the lightest weight wheel and tire combos that meet the following criteria for my truck:

    - Bolt Pattern: 6x139.7
    - Wheel minimum height: 17" (to clear brakes)
    - Wheel minimum width: 7.0"
    - Wheel minimum offset: 0mm (-12 to -38 preferred)
    - Tire Height Range: 30-33"
    - Tire Width Range: 9.0-11.0" (up to 12.5" in rear)
    - Wheel budget: < $2000
    - Tire category: Street Performance or A/T (no "highway")
    - UTQG minimum: 400 A B
    - Minimum max load per tire: 2000lbs

My research has led me thus far to looking for flow formed wheels, such as SCS. The issue with these seems to be limited selection above 17".
For tires (source: Toyo), they really seem to be within +/-5lbs for a given height - wheel size (sidewall) does not seem to matter much, but width does.

So far, my setup comparisons are as follows:
    When I bought the truck: OEM 15" + Toyo OC A/T IIs = 24 + 40lbs = 64lbs [the number to beat, at minimum]
Currently: 3rd gen 17" + Kenda Klever R/Ts = 25 + 70lbs = 95lbs [really anything is an improvement from here; I would keep in garage until I'm deliberately going offroading]

    Some wheels of interest:
    - Fuel Shok 18" (-12): 28lbs
    - Vision Inferno 20" (-18): 38lbs
    - Ultra Prowler 20" (-12): 37lbs
    - FN 17" (0) = 22lbs
    - SCS F5 17" (-38) = 23lbs
    - SCS F5 17" (-10) = 22lbs
    - Modco 17" (0) = 23lbs

Some tires of interest (all Toyo so far):
    - Proxes ST III (34-40lbs)
    - Open Country QT (35-40lbs)
    - Celcius CUV (32-39lbs)
    - Proxes Sport AS+ (fails the size & load tests but they were just released with promise of more sizes by 2025)

Right now the winners would be:
    Fuel Shock 18" + Toyo Celcius CUV P235/65R18s @ 28+32 = 60lbs (load rating barely under 2000lbs, exactly 30")
    SCS or FN 17" + Toyo Proxes ST III P275/60R17 @ 22/23+37 = 59/60lbs (exactly 30")

So it's looking like a smaller wheel IS better since they grow in weight significantly faster than tires as wheel size increases, at least from the wheels & tires I've looked at, but I'm happy to have this challenged.
Also interested in getting the tire weight down, if anyone has some recommendations.

I’m about to purchase a wheel & tire setup for my 24 4runner, I’ve lifted a few Tacoma’s over the years, so I’m somewhat well versed on the wheel and tire selections.

Typically utilize an D or E load, probably going SL this time in a 285/70/17 Nitto Recon, it’s 48.94lbs. I have considered the 275/70/17, but they are very limited and most are E Rated.

Tire Size . Com is a great site for time info, actual size and weights.

Wheel wise: SCS wheels, FN Wheels or Modco wheels in 17x8(ish) with an average of 22-24 lbs.

You'll save the most weight by finding an SL-rated tire, probably in the narrowest width possible.

I know you said you need 17", but for reference I'm running a Toyo AT3 in a 246/75r16, SL rated, advertised weight is 37lbs. I have those mounted on 3rd gen 4runner 5-stars at around 21lbs each.

So that's 58lbs/wheel (confirmed on the warehouse scale at work), and there's another ~3lbs that could be saved my moving to an SCS F5, if you don't mind running a wider rim (F5 is 8", recommended with for a 245 is 7").

For your 17s, you could get the Toyo AT3 in:

    245/70r17 (30.6" advertised diameter, recommended 7" rim) SL @ 35lbs
    255/75r17 (31.1" advertised diameter, recommended 7.5" rim) SL @ 37lbs
    265/65r17 (30.6" advertised diameter, recommended 8" rim) SL @ 38lbs
    265/70r17 (31.1" advertised diameter, recommended 8" rim) SL @ 39lbs

Of the bunch, I'd pick the 255/75. I prefer more sidewall, and think a nominal 31" (30.5"-ish actual) on a 17" rim looks proportionally awkward on a first gen.

For some reason, Toyo's black sidewall (BSW) variants often have a lower advertised weight than the outlined wight lettering (OWL) variants. No idea how the lettering can add up to a significant weight difference, but I've seen that pattern over a few different tire sizes.

This thread sent me down a rabbit hole! I’m looking for 33” tires specifically, for a 4th gen, and preferably with 3 peaks mountain snowflake ratings for snowboarding, often the roads require traction tires, although can also just carry chains.

The stock combo is around 64 lbs. wheel 27, 31” tire 37 lbs. so would be great to upgrade to a 33” for the same weight. SCS wheels are about 22 lbs, and a 285/70r17 Firestone Destination AT2/4s is just about 42 lbs. that combo would give me 33s, 3PMS, and stock weight:IMG_1084.jpg

looks decent, also has a good warranty. My 2nd close consideration is Cooper Discoverer AT3 with black wall. Just like OP said about toyos the white letters add a couple pounds. It’s got an extra 1/8” of tread depth too compared to Firestone

here’s all my other data for 33” SL load (P-metric) All Terrain Tires:

I've done extensive research on this.

17" wheels that are affordable and relatively lightweight and haven't been mentioned yet:

    American Racing AR172 - 17x8 - 25.31#
    AGP 306 - 17x8 - 25#
    Black Rhino Stadium - 17x8.5 - 26#
    DX4 Beast, Caper, Rhino, Rover - 17x8.5 - 25#
    KMG Bully Ol - 17x8.5 - 24.47#
    Modco wheels - 17x8.5 - 23#
    Nomad 502DU - 17x8.5 - 23.80#
    Raceline 952B, 952BZ - 17x8.5 - 25#

    There's more but pricier

From the package mentioned you are not going to see any significant savings from that. You could look into www.fnwheels.com and maybe save another 2-3lbs. The 16x8's Countersteer Offroad's I had were about 18lbs. However not something I would have high confidence in holding up to hard offroad use.

16x8 zero offset (now FN) Konig Countersteers (17 lbs) from 2009 paired with Michelin Defender LTX 265-75-16 (40 lbs) -- total 57 lbs per wheel/tire assembly. That is 3lbs less than the factory wheels/tires as new.

The wheels have over 250,000 miles on them from two Tacomas (2006 and 2021).

My current wheel / tire setup: 16x8 0 offset FN Countersteer wheels (19.5lbs) with SL 265/75/r16 Toyo AT3s (41lbs).
Total weight = 60.5 lbs. about same weight as stock. The FN wheels shave 4 lbs off the stock trail edition rims allowing me to go up in tire size without adding additional weight.

Let's spice this up for additional recommendations based on the thread responses.

    Max wheel weight: < 25lbs
    Max tire weight: 38lbs
    Max 4-pack wheel cost: $1500

    Wheel summary:

    upload_2024-10-15_9-49-33.png
    Konig Countersteer Type-x:
    17 x 8; 6 x 139.7; -10mm; 20.9lbs;

    Motegi MR150 TrailLite:
    17X8.5; 6X139.7; 4.75 00mm; 24.5lbs
    $920 for 4

AGPs 306 were disqualified for having +5mm offset and no weight listed on their pages. 307s have +0mm but no weight listed but are 27lbs.
Could not confirm the AR172s are over 25lbs, I was seeing closer to 30lbs.
Nomads DQd for being ugly lol
KMG Bully Ol is a contender but I don't like black wheels so those are out
Raceline 952B Aero HD are coming in at 25lbs, so DQ'd.

My brother and I both have AR172s. He weighed all 5 of his when they came in and each was within 0.1 lbs of the claimed 25.31 lb weight.
