I get your point, but to me a gun is reactionary. I do meticulous preparation for my camping trips and practice excellent trail and wildlife safety. Sure, accidents happen, but so long as I plan and execute, I won't have to worry.

To me, it's worth it to lose the extra couple pounds if it means I can carry better food or a book.

x2 you can watch some youtube vids along with alot of morons spraying themselves with it not expecting the hours of pain after. The bear spray is far more powerfull than regular police mace or personal protection mace. i would rather get hit with police mace than with bear spray. or you could taze me and we would be good lol

A gun is reactionary... what? I suppose first aid is too then.

Anyway, AFAIK bear spray's active ingredient is still capsaicin. Like anything else, I've heard mixed reviews; I've read both that it doesn't work and that experienced individuals would pack bear spray over a gun.

Considering I'm not really too worried about bear in the first place, I haven't really looked into it. I'm positive it works great against aggressive dogs. ;)

Oh, I completely agree to the weight issue! I was just pointing out something else...

"Sure, accidents happen, but so long as I plan and execute, I won't have to worry" that's my point, plan the best you can, but we both know that one should still be concerned. i'm just saying that it sounds like because you plan well (which is critical of course), nothing bad will ever happen out there... (i know you don't believe that - it just kind of sounds that way)

great read (recommended, it's all true stories) ... unfortunately, i chose to read it while camping in Montana... although I was much the wiser for having read it.

What does it look like all folded up? Reason asking is while I think it looks incredibly badass and is a great idea, whenever I use to go camping the bed of our truck was always full of shit besides our tent. Seems like the truck tents take up more space then they create I guess is what I'm trying to say.

I just got this straight from the Counter Assault Site.

"Active Ingredient - 2% Capsaicin and other related Capsaicinoids (3.2 million SHU)
The main ingredient in COUNTER ASSAULT BEAR DETERRENT is an extract of RED PEPPER oil which affects the upper respiratory system, triggering involuntary eye closure and intense burning. "

ive sprayed this crap and had it blow back at me... Like Dave, I would rather be sprayed with regular pepper spray or tazed... both of which I have done too. lol

You guys are starting to worry me about bears. How many of you guys actually encountered one.

And now I'm thinking wether or not I should get some sort of firearm to take with me.

Bears, mountain lions, moose...you name it and I've probably been too close to one at some point. Been chased by a moose (got too close to his girlfriend), stalked by a lion, been within a few yards of a bear (thankfully I was in my truck at the time), had tracks very close to camp on several occasions, and many more encounters. If you spend enough time out there you will run into something sooner or later! Just have to be careful and keep a clean camp, know whats in the area, and be alert.

The bears I encounter in the midwest just run away from you when you find them in the woods, I don't bother carrying when I am out camping in the national forests or places like that.

However, I have started carrying when I bring my dog with me, and not because of bears. Wolves have come back in a big way in wisconsin, and I've been a few yards from a pack of three of them a couple years ago. Their cool, but damn, they are a lot biggern than I expected. I realize they are generally just going to run from me, but my dog is kind of dumb and would probably try to go and play with the wolves.

    Nice snag! Like the rims!

I see your from Minn, when I went on a 6 day trip to the BWCA we saw wolves one night, but heard them every night. Your right, their size is very misleading. Wish I would have seen some moose tho!

I've only encountered 4 or 5 rabid, giant Kodiak bears... no biggy. And that was over two trips....
