You can also get a plain chip key with no buttons for the keyless entry and hide that the same way too. One of my keys that I got made is like that. I have only used it to leave with the mechanic or a valet. The only issue is that is someone found it in the key box they could drive off in the truck, a slight security risk but it would save you if you lost your set of keys in the woods, a lake or something especially if you were far from home where you had a spare. A plain chip key was like an extra $30 from Tom's Key. I rented the programmer and set them all up. I think that would be better to store and use only in emergency due to do no battery to go bad like the H key with the fob integrated.

If you have a keyed ignition, then leaving the good key in the truck uses very little energy. Get a cheap metal key made (or a few) to carry in the woods, on a boat, or anywhere you think you might lose the good one.
If someone breaks into the truck, and finds the good key in your hiding spot, you've only made their task a bit easier than it would have been otherwise.

I bought a 2008 Corolla and it only came with one transponder key and one fob. I didnt want a locksmith to clone the existing one, so I sourced an OEM key + fob from parts.toyota.com and looked for the cheapest dealer. It came out ot be $95 shipped for both.

I contacted local dealers and got quotes to have it cut and programmed and it was nearly all the same. $200-225

I asked the dealer to remove the key I don't have from the ECU/ ECM.

You can go the cheaper route and have a locksmith clone the existing key. Its cheaper but I wanted a true OEM Key programmed correctly.

A good locksmith can set you up a lot cheaper than the dealer, and can program accordingly. For those of us with the H key, my understanding is that the truck can only be programmed with a maximum of 4 transponder keys, but the plain keys will get you into the cab.

I had an aftermarket remote start added shortly after buying my 2019 SR5 in June of 2020. The shop that installed that recommended a locksmith a few miles away who could make H keys so that I wouldn't have to carry the factory fob.

The locksmith cut two keys and then programmed the chip using a tool that he connected to the OBD2 jack.

During our move one H key and one OEM fob went missing. I went to Car Key at a nearby Costco down here in Texas and they fixed me up with a new H key.

I haven't replaced the OEM fob yet as I still have some hope that my still unpacking a year later wife will find the two missing keys. If not, someday I'll get another fob from Car Key Express.

4 Transponder chip keys is what I heard is the limit that can be stored in the truck's memory as well. what happens when you have 4 and loose one? not sure, my guess is one gets bumped out then you have to check that all the keys you have work and clear and reprogram them all if needed.

Can get H key made without the buttons for half the price. It will lock/unlock and work the ignition. That was from a company that makes car keys. Not sure what a locksmith would charge

Any guide how to do this? I got techstream working but could never get it to connect to my truck.

My Taco came with a fob, plus the tailgate key. (I bought it used).

To that end, I now have four fobs (one OEM, three aftermarket). I simply cracked open my fob, googled the part number on the chips, and found the aftermarket fobs for sale two years ago during a Black Friday sale. $40 each, shipped.

I rented Tom's Key Keyporgrammer, and was able to add the three aftermarket fobs. I never got the emergency keys in those aftermarket fobs cut... You can do a LOT better than a dealer.

This is to program the remote.
    1. Put master key in ignition and turn to ON.
    2. Open Techstream.
    3. Select MainBody.
    4. Click on Utility.
    5. Select Wireless Code Registration and follow the prompts.

To program the transponder chip, you use the utility under the immobilizer section. I just move the transponder chip from key to key instead.

No it will not start. I had key made at the store for my 2007 Tacoma and it won't start but it can unlock/lock the door, though. So I got that key made without chip and place it in the bowl.. So no one can start it, only me. I have my primary key up here with me.
