Does anyone know if it's in-house or made by a supplier?

I have no idea on supplier but know there are supplier firms that make components - tailor welded blanks in this case. Maybe you will find this interesting. In addition to stuff in this white paper the Sheldon Brown interview and videos discussed the frame including use of new or better coatings.

My fascination in this is the stuff on the safety and crashing because the gen 4 is an on frame vehicle that achieves top safety pick.

2023 it was the Colorado that gets a good rating. Ram, GM, and Toyota 1/2 tons get good saftey ratings.

I did this the day I brought it home. Noticed that there was "clear grease" coming out of holes that I'm guessing is cavity wax for extra corrosion protection.

Couldn't find anything that said who made it though!

The IIHS testing is more rigorous. In that far more don't do well in offset crash and the 4 door pickups have been historically bad for side and rear crashes. New or current generation Ford and GM have not passed that yet. IIHS also tests headlights.

We lost a family member - not his fault - in a POS smash-o-matic roof Ford. My nephew a most difficult surgeries team leader in trauma center and friend's wife an ER supervisor see the reality of top safety pick vehicles making a difference. I'll not forget having to deal with getting our loved one's body home and going through the bloody smashed up wreck to get his belongings. I'll forever be ____ you to any auto maker who skimps on safety and hope no one else has that experience.

In other posts I've also explained the usually 5.5 foot beds no good for me. I know there's risk in a first year Toyota redesign but our company fleet GM, Ford and Stellantis vehicles show me they usually have more little issues and don't always stand behind their stuff like Toyota.

There was still a top saftey pick midsize last year and the year before that and it wasn't the Tacoma. 5 years from now IHS will be calling the 4G Tacoma a death trap. New vehicles evolve and the newest vehicles usually get ranked higher.

    Edit

I see 3G got a top saftey pick in 2020, along with the ridgeline and the Santa Cruz has gotten a good rating since 2020 and on. For some reason the ranking agency thinks the type of lighting element makes a truck safer. That's not true halogen and LED headlights both provide enough light to safely operate a midsize truck in the dark.

It doesn't work that way. For example, IIHS still has Top Safety Pick+ for our 2013 model car though a 2024 model would have to pass the current standard to achieve Top Safety Pick+. The 2020 you mentioned stood out because I knew it had some poor marks then, and from that it was not acceptable for my wife. It still has same rating now that it had in 2020 where it got some marks that were marginal and poor.

    T
he NTSB ratings are still important but IIHS is more rigorous.

One of our vehicles has the "smart" lights IIHS now requires for + ranking. The new Tacoma lights are very good but adjustment is not automatic nor compensating for oncoming traffic or turns. I recall some reading that supported why the insurance industry is happy to pay for the higher replacement costs - fewer accidents and fewer accidents with injury or death.

I’m planning on applying cavity wax (Woolwax Creep N’ Crawl) to the underside of my taco soon. Was under the truck last night looking at the frame and I noticed this too. I’m glad Toyota does this, but it doesn’t look like mine has good coverage inside the frame coming from the factory.
