oo got the ender working hard today

I've about given up on the ol maker select V2 and ender 3 we have here, but I can't justify the $800 for the bambu p1s that I would want to replace them with

Really is; a part of me wrote off half the steel on the table thinking "249ipm is gonna fuck this thing up"

Table is only rated for 300ipm lol it's why I tell anyone getting into CNC to fully expect anything from Langmuir as strictly hobby grade

On the other plasma cutter, I was running 16 gauge at only 110ipm and it cut beautifully with only 30 amps

The ender 3 is basically a GMT400, it's cheap, kinda broken, makes you look poor. But it works as long as you satisfy it's extremely simple needs. We had a MakerBot at my last job though and I would have run it over with the truck if it wasn't purchased with state funding.

I don't know shit about 3D printers, but one thing a wise man once told me is -

"If you want to get into 3D printing, get a Bambu or Prusa. If you want to get into 3D printers, get an Ender"

Prusa enclosed unit will be my next printer purchase most likely. I would like to do ABS and ASA reliably. But actually the ender has been really good. I think it is largely in part to me using the prusa slicer. The settings in there and the machine profile for the ender seem more finely tuned than the one in the actual creality slicer

my experience with the ender is that it's fun as a toy, it can make great prints but it requires a lot of TLC every time I wanna use it...like my Tacoma :homer:

    If I ever got a 3D printer, it'd definitely be a Prusa.

I just haven't been convinced due to the parts I've received from other people. Don't get me wrong, the prints were great and a perfect fit depending on the application, but many parts felt "brittle" to me. I'm betting more it's the composition of the print that'd help make things stronger/solid, then again I don't know shit about 3D printing.

What is it about ABS/ASA that would warrant a premium 3D printer?

Yeah a few parts I received were done on an Ender. Great stuff, one of which is used often (a dino chip bag clip ) but hear a lot of people buy them because they like toying with stuff so they'll upgrade/change a lot of parts out on their Ender.

I got used to having to touch off all my tools when I worked in the machine shop so leveling the bed takes me like a minute and a half. Other than that just making sure you have the code in your slicer set up decently to warm the bed and the extruder up appropriately seem to mitigate a lot of its weirdness. Obviously set your expectations realistic too. It makes really strong prints with PLA, PETG, TPU... But anything else is going to be kind of experimental because it's not an enclosed printer.

ABS and ASA and quite a few other compositions are picky about the environment they're laid in. To get proper layer adhesion you need temperature to be stable. The enclosed units can manage their temperature well and most of the premium printers have higher quality extruder hot ends and beds that can reach higher temps. Some of these plastic compositions are abrasive and having them go through your printer will wear them out so it's nice to have the all metal parts in them. I've never had any problems with the strength of 3D printed parts though. I mean use them appropriately and for sure design your parts with 3D printing in mind if that's how you're going to produce them. But I bet if I sent you some of my prints you'd be surprised with how strong they are. Part of 3D printing is knowing what plastic composition is going to be appropriate for the application. Like I'm not going to put a PLA part in a car. It'll fucking deform from heat. But you can get pretty froggy with ASA or PETG or even ABS in some cases. ASA and ABS are very rigid. So is PLA, you can make structurally very strong parts with them. PETG is a little softer but it does well with heat and it's not as rubbery soft like TPU. I like making car interior parts out of PETG because they feel like a quality printed molded part when they're done. A lot of people that sell their 3D printed stuff don't do any after treatment either. I typically like to sand my parts a little bit and then give them a skim coat of Bondo before paint. But some people just print in the color they want and leave there extrusion steps visible.

    No way dude, it's you

    You're causing more stress yourself

Do you see a therapist at all? It could really help (in a genuinely, serious way)
