Unknown on the tool fitting. I did not have one to use at the time we rebuilt my shocks. And the one that we have now in the kit is not in my possession.

Regarding gmrs, I was only talking about what I think is the right thing for me. Just as Monte and Ben have done, everyone has to decide what the right thing to do is for their own situation.

I don't buy into the idea that folks need to hear a recommendation from me.

 

10-4 on the tool. How did you get the end cap off, just a set of channel locks? And who has the kit (please say Zane) at the moment so I can check with them? I'm also asking ADS of course, as well.

For the radio, fair enough on saying what is for you. As for the "folks don't need to hear recommendations from you," my response would be, "Don't undersell yourself." You've got a ton of experience and your opinions are well-reasoned and valuable. Everyone provides their opinions, you should too! Shoot man, IMO if there's someone in this world who should be influencing others, it's you. And not just b/c you make a mean guac.

Headed to Zane's for some 5th gear work in a couple days , could have checked if it fit.

 

I thought you told me you have that tool for removing the end cap.

Edit: ha well nevermind. My icom 5100 will work on GMRS so whatever. In fact I'd bet most of you with HAMs can do that.

Hmm well maybe mine can. There is an expanded version that does. Or I might have to just clip a couple diodes. Either way. I don't need a new radio. Still need the license.

 

Also wow. No GMRS for me. 3-400 a setup? nope.

 

I had read that too and asked your Dad about that same question. He kind of dodged around the answer. Not sure why. But the context was about modifying my Kenwood. Maybe that was the unknown.

Should be able to do it for $200 including license. Still a good chunk of change.

I do have, but with my piggybacks, they are too close to the body to fit the tool.

There are some expensive ones, but the one I have is in the $150 range: Midland MXT275 mobile GMRS

 

what radio do you have?

eh, suppose so. would rather replace the cb and that won't fit there. Not sure any will though.

 

The Nitro kit would not have helped you. That is the same tool I put in there.

I have not purchased yet. Debating whether a 15 watt unit would be sufficient.

I would love to fit one in the old ashtray slot too.

It'll already monitor GMRS freq's just need to do that to allow transmission.

 

Interesting. Looks like option #2 might do it. Do you know what is meant by "perform a reset".

This would certainly be a simpler solution.

 

I imagine a full radio reset to make it reconize the mod.

Now I'd think the the performance might not be stellar per say as that'll be a bit outside what the antenna will be tuned for. But I doubt it'll suck.

 

Everything I looked at says the hams aren't supposed to do it but if you fuck around with them enough they'll get up there. It makes sense that the icom would have somebody that wrote firmware or at least a how-to unlimit them hardware-wise, they're pretty popular

 

Also you guys are way more incoherent than usual today haha. I mean I'm sleep deprived as fuck, but still usually I can follow the conversation in here.

 

Its a legal thing not a hardware thing. They all can monitor those freqs usually an even beyond. But they limit your transmission as thats what an amateur's license allows.

I'm sure it's just some FCC bullshit I don't care about... But humor me. If you have a GMRS license and a ham license is there really any harm in one radio doing both? Or is it because the ham can transmit at power higher than a typical dedicated GMRS?
