I didn’t mess with the driving modes. I’m sure it was in “normal” mode.

So, a 2nd gen dude drives an iForce, and an iForce MAX and can’t tell the difference. You should probably apply for a job at TFL Truck.

In all seriousness, I could not tell the difference.

Just giving you unnecessary shit. Sorry.

I really need to drive the hybrid Tacoma and compare myself. My expectation would be that it is a smoother experience at slow speeds, and possibly if you really nail the accelerator for freeway passing and other scenarios.

My non hybrid only has 600 miles on it and there is a lot for me to learn on it.

I could almost sorta *maybe* feel what they were trying to do with the torque fill but it just...wasn't working out.

ETA: is this why *very* few Tundra iForce MAX models were sold early on, before the engine issue was discovered?

I drove them back to back as a comparison before making my decision. The MAX had much more off the line torque and smoother power. I did not want to stick my foot into it since both trucks had less than 10 miles on them so I cannot tell you much more. I could definitely tell the difference and like the power to ground much more in the Iforce MAX.

Did the same - my experience and takeaways mirror yours. Non-hybrid was definitely working more/revving out more off the line.

I think, based on putting two and two together (online research, talking to the shop foreman at my local dealer, on here, etc) that the hybrid system is programmed to only kick in when it becomes practically necessary. It is NOT designed to increase the truck's driver-perceived performance, if that makes sense. Meaning: if, for example, you're towing up a steep hill and the gasoline engine starts to fall behind in the curve, the 48 HP electric motor jumps in to help. But it's not going to kick in when you punch it in an unladen truck from a dead stop on a straightaway because you happen to be in that "feeling the need for speed" mood.

I think this is why the drag numbers (done by YouTubers of various levels of competency or not) are so close.

I very well may be wrong about this but it's my current line of thinking.

I should also note that when I test drove the iForce MAX truck yesterday, I had an older sales lady with me and didn't want to make her uncomfortable by punching it. I also, as noted earlier, did not even think to try the different driving modes.

The electric motor starts your move every single time, every stop light/red light youll be using the battery when you accelerate. Anytime you need to accelerate theres some battery usage. If youre on a flat road and let off the accelerator the battery will also take over. I was using just battery going 40mph the other day(maybe went .5 mile) , untill you need a slight boost then the engine kicks back on.

Sounds like operation of every other hybrid which completely makes sense.

Can you tell this based on dashboard instrumentation?

Drive them side-by-side, one after another and then you will see the instant difference……. I definitely did.

You can’t possibly try to do an honest comparison of two things you drove months apart from one another

As I mentioned, I felt limited to what I could do with the sales lady in the pax seat.

The best test would be to drive an iForce MAX model both with and without the hybrid system disabled. But unfortunately, I don't think there is a gas-only driving mode on the MAX models.

If you’re referring to whether they’re different as far as the engine/turbo set up alone, Toyota, has already admitted that The non-hybrid and hybrid motors are not the same, and are also mapped differently as to are the manual motors also mapped differently from the other two

Are you sure? The Car Care Nut on YouTube says they both have the T24A-FTS.

Do you have a link to this admission? I’d like to see how the two 2.4 liter engines differ.

This is the first time I've heard that the iForce 2.4 T and the iForce MAX 2.4 T engines are physically different.
