I know I need to post some pics ... but I have to find the camera and learn how to post them here too.

    I loved my 2009 so well ... I got a 2011 exactly like it ... wife actually bought the 2011 for me ... :D

Planning to sell my "babied 2009" with 21,500 miles maybe starting this weekend (after I change oil/ filter and wash & wax it again).

Morale of the story is: I looked at many trucks over the past week, including some small SUVs like Honda CRV & RAV4 (V-6) and the Tacoma is still the best buy out there in my book. ... :D

I even drove several full sized trucks including a Raptor and I will stay with the smaller Tacoma (especially for the money & value). ... :D

Why the new one? I mean, new IS pretty awesome, but I agree with the others' question. :)

    I didn't change ... got the same truck ... it's like "ground-hog day". ... :D

Wife did the same thing with her 2010 Honda Fit last Saturday too. She "traded" hers though ... $1,870.00 difference for a 2011 and she drove the traded in 2010 for 22,000 miles. (those were some cheap miles).

The dealer was selling a used one (like my 2009) for more money than I bought my 2011 (exact same trucks too, even the color). Crazy ...

Used vehicles are WAY up in price now ... and the new ones will be going up when the allotments are cut due to the earthquake (Honda & Toyota both said this).

    ... ie .... DC-SB TRD 4x2 Silver

OK. I was wondering if you maybe went from 4x2 to 4x4, or just didn't like the color of your other one. They are basically the same truck, so I was just curious. Congrats on your new ride.

We actually did a different deal in our minds and on paper too.

I am doing about $25,000 work on the house ... so I sell my truck (paid for) and use that money on house.

Financed the 2011 @ 2.9% so ... it is almost like Toyota financed my house work at 2.9% and I am freeing up my equity in my 2009 at a good time.

Interesting. I have never understood why folks around here trade in a 2nd Gen for an identical 2nd Gen, but it sounds like it was pennies to do so. I fully anticipate a certain member to come here and claim the resale value of our trucks are bogus, propogated by a Toyota conspiracy/lie. and that you crazy for not buying used.

    .

It ALL depends on the dealer, the model, the area and availability of used vehicles and timing.

ie ... Right after (Cash For Clunkers) lower end used vehicles went up 25% and now with Japan short on parts & etc. ... used are way up and certain new ones are starting to dry up.

I'm in the same boat, I put a shitload of money down on my truck and a few months later decide I want to do some work on my house. There are other options tho... how about a refinance with your credit union. I can do 2.9% and free up money tied in my truck and not loose $2000-3000 of money from it losing value (and it did - I had the trade in value checked). Unless you like to waste money, what's the point unless your truck needs new tires ?

I think that I have my 2009 sold within $1750.00 of what the new one cost and I put 21,500 miles on the 2009 ... my 2009 is super cherry too.

    (1) Difference in "book value" between a 2009 and a 2011 (same truck) is at least 1,500.00 ... therefore I drove the 2009 at 21,500 miles for about $250.00. Those are cheap miles ... :D

This is rare ...but I have done it before at different times since 2000. It can work given the right circumstances and the right dealer and right buyer.

Also, "private party to private party sales" have no sales tax in GA at this time. But legislators in Georgia are trying to change that at this moment.

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s ... I could buy certain hard to get vehicles .... drive them 1,000 to 2,000 miles (keeping them super cherry) and sell them at a premium to my buying price. That is a gone era and was good during the "Dot Com Boom" when money was chasing certain cars.

PS ... cheap money is good no matter where you get it. .... ie ... my old home equity loan (can't get this loan now) was at 1.87% last month and I will keep it until it goes up and then I pay it off.

Used vehicles are usually a better deal ... unless there are special circumstances in the marketplace ... but sometimes new can be as cheap or cheaper. "Sometimes" is the key word here.

I know that this won't make sense to some ... but it can work, given the right circumstances.

PS ... You can NOT do this with a Dodge Durango though ... :D .... it has to be a high demand vehicle that holds it's value too.

PPS ... That same dealer sold a 31,000 mile 2009 Tacoma like my 2011 for $400.00 more than mine ... some people believe that a used vehicle is ALWAYS a better deal and that is NOT always the case. Most of the time used is cheaper, but not always.

PPPS ... Maybe 5 years ago ... I could get credit card money at 0% with a 2% fee (for 12 months) and invest it at 4% ... but those days are long gone too. 2% net on a $100k was $2,000 just for some paperwork. It all boils down to buying at one rate and selling that money at a higher rate and NEVER miss a payment.

I hear what you are saying... I saw a used 2010 selling for more than I paid for my 2011 when I was searching for a truck. To me it was a no brainer to go new since I wanted a slightly used truck at a discount but couldn't find one. However in PA, if you trade a car in to buy a car of more value, you only pay taxes on the difference, I would imagine that you have the same scenario. So even if you broke even on the sale, if you are paying $1800 in taxes (at 6%) + other dealer charges unless you trade. In other words, it's easier taking the depreciation hit and just trading the truck in than to go thru the aggravation of selling it it most cases. Don't get me wrong... I wish you the best on your new purchase and congrats.
