Should probably go at least 35×35, in preparation for the next tire upgrade. :D

Not necessarily. You would just leave the opening facing the tailgate and it would slide right out.

I just noticed there's no driver side cubby on the 2020. That's lame.
Where are ya suppose to hide all the wires? lol

Yeah but 90 lb spares don't just slide out, especially on the rubber bed mat. It would need to be up by the cab so I have room for my cooler and other stuff at the back. I'd have to winch it out. :D

Edit: there's also the issue of getting it past the wheel well with my storage on the right...

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
From what I gather, he wants to keep the weight forward. With the tire forward, you have to pull anything you store under the platform out to get the tire out. Then there is the having to pull the tire the whole length of the bed under the platform to get it out...across the rubber bed mat. Keeping the tire to the rear blocks getting to any other storage you may want in front of it.

If you look at Dean's picture again, you see that the tire just barely fits between the wheelwell and the storage unit. Where are you going to put support for the platform? You could go over the storage unit, but that makes getting things out of that harder. Then there's the 'headroom' over the platform. With the cab high soft topper, there wouldn't be much to try to crawl into.

To me, wheel front and right, over the storage unit is the best solution, with the fewest downsides.

Hell, just put it in the back seat in that case.

Or even leave it home, as @pearing suggested...save the weight. Who even uses a spare anymore?

I've went out a few times on the trail with no spare just a plug kit. Around town spare always stays home.

I figured you would have it on plywood, or something that it would slide across nicely.

I understand that. My thought was that the spare would sit tight to the back of the cab on the floor in the platform would go over the top of it. Whether it's over or under the platform, you're going to have to move stuff out of the way to get at it.

I do agree with you there.

I guess I assumed he would be changing up his whole storage setup now that he is adding the spare tire to the mix.

I actually might consider that if I had a taco. I'm thinking with my next platform the spare tire is going to be directly behind the driver's seat, where the rear seat would normally be.

I should've added that that was tongue-in-cheek as that had already been discussed.

I couldn't do this. I would be too worried about it.

Funny, there was a guy on the 4Runner forum Who removed his spare, but his reasoning was better fuel economy. As if removing 70 lb from underneath the vehicle was going to affect the fuel economy in any measurable way, lol.

I'm starting to wish that Brewery was closer to my bowling alley. It would be nice to pop in and say hi to everyone.

I didn't like it on the trail. Just didn't have room for it those trips. Now it'll be even worse with the upgrade. I have to figure something out.

Spare is always there... you just can't tell. Room to grow too.

Works for some, not for most. Mine is a work truck too, but I regularly haul computer equipment and TVs and such. Bed sides, a tailgate and a cover help with that. Servers and battery backups don't like weather much.

I keep saying our IT team needs a van (preferably A-Team style) but it's never in the budget...

Just measured...a 33" tire would just fit through the door. Then you have to secure it somehow. Having 70# of anything flying around in a wreck sounds like a bad time.

Why not just leave it in the spare carrier under the bed? Lower COG, no bed intrusion, etc
