    Wow,

Thanks for the input guys. You know, I copied and pasted the link for reference, but its been a minute since I looked at this tank and I really don't remember it being that much when I originally found it. Having said that, The idea was for more range on the truck without having to load the back up or put some type of rack on the truck to hold the cans. Though, obviously that is the much cheaper and reasonable option.

I really appreciate the real world feedback from the members with experience on this tank.

So what range exactly are you getting now? My stock 23 TRDOR is getting about 300-320 mi per tank according to the computer. I know the tank itself is heavier, plus the extra gas. Accounting for that weight, I was hoping that it would add another 120mi or so.

I've considered one, and opted against it, mostly because the stock tank is fine for me on most trips. I carry two jerry cans when I need them, and that's been enough to keep me from running out of gas on trips where I'm going a very long distance/time between gas stations (eg: Canyonlands Maze District, Death Valley) or simply bringing extra gas to avoid paying crazy prices in Bridgeport, Lee Vining, and inside Yosemite and Death Valley.

edit: If I needed more gas for something like driving to Tuktoyaktuk, I'd probably just get a third jerry can.

About 370mi to the tank. I get roughly 13.3mpg highway NOT loaded for camping. But the reality is, GFC, drawer build, fridge, steel rear bumper w/spare and other odds and ends added A LOT of weight. ‍ oh well.

No because the installer filled it maybe 1/4 way just to check for leaks/issues. The only way I could TRULY check the capacity would be to run it dry to the point where the truck shuts off, but that wouldn’t be good for the fuel pump.

I run 44 gallons with an aux tank where the spare tire used to be and it's been a game changer for long trips offroad. (on highways I just keep it mostly empty)
You never know on long stretches if there's an obstacle that forces you to turn around, which if I'm crawling in low range, I get 5-8mpg so having the peace of mind to make sure I won't run out is worth the extra weight. Plus my furnace runs on gasoline straight from this tank so no need for additional fuel cans and finding a safe place to store it.

Thanks for the info dude. I'll be adding front and rear steel bumpers, winch, sliders, MTBB 33's and a sport bar in the rear with a light bar on top. I imagine this plus gear would equate to around what you are doing give or take. This was very helpful!

I use one of these, its 14 gallons, has a nozzle so I can fill anyone in my group who is low on fuel. Normally I use it for lake trips to fill the boat though, marina gas is too expensive when I can just bring my own.

That's actually pretty awesome. I looked it up online and it looks pretty nice. they got one with an electric pump too. How's yours lasted? Is it durable?

It leaked when I first got it, but it was just a loose fitting. Overall though its been great, it gets tossed around pretty often, dragged down rocky uneven hills to the docks with little problems.

Don’t see the purpose of upgrading a tank unless u will be in remote areas where u need the extra fuel .even then i would just use some gas cans .

We installed the LRA tank 5 years ago and really like it. It's aluminized steel and is a very high quality build. For us, we wanted maximum range without having multiple extra fuel tanks. That being said we carry two 4 gallon roto packs on the rear of our vehicle for a total of 41 gallons giving us up to a 600 mile range.

For us that was really important. There are places in the world where fuel is extremely scarce such as southern Angola, Malawi, and Uzbekistan. We also enjoy the tank as a way to fill up where prices are low, think Saudi Arabia as opposed to Jordan. When we cross into a new country I am always checking to see which country has the cheaper fuel.

The tank does come with it s idiosyncrasies though. The tank is deeper and using the stock fuel pump the The gas gauge does not budge off of being over full for at least 100 miles. Also, the filler nozzle is fairly finicky, in some countries you have to fill it at a at a low rate otherwise it shuts off.

Would we buy it again? Yes, definitely for our situation this was awesome

For travel in Africa - or Round the world trips, yes; I can see justification for the larger tank.

Not so much in north america...

When off road in Baja, I expected to travel for 3-4 days without seeing fuel stations.

In that case, I went with only 1 additional 5 gal jerry can. This easily adds a good 80 miles of range (@~16mpg).
(See trip report for fuel details)

In normal circumstances (@home), I would never fill-up 30 gals. In my case, the fuel would get old...

You’re going to lose 100lb of payload, this will be felt if you’re towing.

I towed a 5k lb TT 15k miles last year through some pretty remote places and never ran into any issues with planning a gas stop every 200 miles or so.

For that money I wouldn’t bother.

For me I would not spend that much for more fuel, just stop more often. If you are traveling in an area that you may not find a gas station get a couple cans, $2245 for 12 more gallons just isn't worth it.

Thats kinda what I was expecting. though if/when I tow something it will be no more than 3500lbs.
