Yeah I got it with high miles 2 years old and 50k so I think it had more than 20 miles a week, maybe too many

 

I found this in one of the owners manuals. So, we're both right. By a 1/3 of a quart. lol.

The previous engine in the Tacoma took only 4 quarts.

That oil viscosity is good up to 100º F +. It gets hot here, but not that hot.

Guess how many miles I have on my truck, 25K. Not bad for a 12 year old truck, huh?

I usually drive my F150 for work. The Tacoma is basically a grocery getter.

Thanks Rob for more great info. The 5.5 quarts is looking even better lol. Came across this YouTube video of a guy who has worked on 1000’s of Tacoma’s third gen and goes over about every category on the truck and any problems, which years and what problems. Curious how accurate you think his analysis is or if he missed anything. Consensus seems to be the 2016 and 2017 models and mainly the V6 3.5 versions and the 2.7 engine being basically bulletproof. I seemed to have read other very similar reviews as well and not so great stuff about the 2024 models between transmission issues and making a mistake going with the 4cyl turbo as turbo will not last as long as the non turbo 2.7, I will try to post the link here:

Yep, on the battery replacement thread now as the next thing seems i will need is a battery as you know don’t last long down here. Kind of interesting as i used to beza Interstate fan but they don’t seem to last like they used to and switched to a AGM battery in my previous car with no issues. Thread talking about how lead acid are better than AGM which Im skeptical but the shocking part is people saying you need a tune in the Tacoma for the AGM battery to work good. Something to the effect that the charging system will not charge a AGM battery properly without a tune. Trying to get more info on that one as its a head scratcher to me lol

Well its going back some can’t remember the vehicle, camaro maybe, high miles and then put mobile 1 in and then it started to leak out the rear main seal. Put high mileage dino oil back in and it stopped. Might have even put some kind of Lucas oil in it to stop. Can’t remember too much weed back then lol.
Thats also when rear main seals and valve gaskets usually leaked and the manufacturer ran 10-30/40 or 20-50. I use to use castrol 20-50 in the small Toyota motors back then. Im sure nowadays everything is sealed up better and running low weight synthetic. Concern was going from an older style engine that would take say dino 10-30/40 and switching to synthetic

12.6V multimeter/surface tested or pressure tested?
At 6 years in Florida you are skating on thin ice.
I get 5.5-6 years max up here in GA.
RAV's battery was great until wife got in to go to work and car did not start. She says it started fine the day before. I put battery tender on our cars every 6 month to charge up the batteries, since our commute to work is under 10 miles. Not sure if it helped or not. Maybe it would have died in 3 years, maybe not.

 

Synthetic probably cleaned some crud leftover from dino oil that had plugged up the leak?
Early synthetics were ester based, and esters are great cleaners on their own, without any additives.

 

Yep Im sure thats what happened didn’t know if the newer synthetics “cleaned” like the older ones did

 

You’re absolutely good to switch. Don’t worry about a darn thing.

 

Other question I had other than the battery is tune up plugs, wires, etc how often tgey need to be done on the 2.7

 

12.6V surface. I know it's due to fail. Just glad I have that. I have an Advanced Auto about 1/10th of a mile down the street.

I can walk there in 5 minutes. Hell, I could push the truck there. Home Depot is about a mile. + I have a 1 gauge custom jumper cable I made.

 

Hey Tony, the plugs are good for 100,000 miles. I only use Ruthenium NGK plugs now. The best of the best. About $9 each at RockAuto. Probably last 200,000 miles. Just kiddin'.

Denso Iridium is probably what's in there. $6.00.



Gap is 0.044". No wires, just coil packs.


They usually give out without warning. Should last the life of the truck.

I haven't changed spark plug wires or a distributor cap in years.

That I wouldn't worry about.
