    Hey guys,
My 2014 Taco trd sport 4x4 has been making a noise that sounds like metal hitting against metal, similar to a chain swinging and hitting the underside of the truck because it is a continuous noise for a few seconds.
Now I know everyone will say it’s the chain hanging from my spare wheel but trust me it’s not, I’ve zip tied the chain and even taped it so it doesn’t move at all. I’ve checked everything underneath if anything is loose and nothing. Everything is fine. I’ve had this noise for over a year and can’t figure it out. Nothing is wrong with my truck mechanically or with the suspension if people might say my suspension is clapped out. This noise only happens when I brake or accelerate suddenly or when going over speed bumps, also if the truck body is driving on an angle or the body rolls like if I’m going over a curb with one of the wheels. This noise doesn’t happen 100% of the time but it’s most of the time.
    Please someone help thanks

What would be wrong with it? Like I said I’ve been driving with this noise for over a year and there is nothing wrong with my truck, everything is mechanically sound. And if something was wrong with the transfer case wouldn’t it make a noise all the time? Not just when I go over bumps or when I jerk the truck by either accelerating or stopping. Sorry I’m not an expert with cars or trucks, I do a lot of the work on my own truck but nothing with the big stuff like the engine, tranny, tcase etc. So I don’t know what I would be looking for if it is the transfer case

220,000 km so about 136,000 miles. Are you talking about the timing chain? Would there be any other symptoms if this was the case?

Are you sure it's not front brake pad slap? Pretty normal for them to make a "clink" sound when stepping on the brake due to the design of the calipers and how the pads are held in place.

I had a similar noise that turned out to be the alignment guy never tightened down the LCA bolts. Tightened them up and noise went away.

Can be front body bushings, common source of noise like that

I don’t think so because it makes the noise even when I’m not braking. It does it when I suddenly accelerate aswell or even when I go over bumps without braking.

I’ll check if those are tightened but I haven’t had any alignment work done or any kind of suspension work done ever on this truck

How would I check if this is the problem? Would I have to bring it into a shop/dealership?

No most transfer cases have a chain. Not 100% how Toyotas are built. Ive seen these chains stretch excessively but its unusual. Does the rattle occure on accelel or decel?
I had lower arms replaced (06 Sienna) and a loose bolt caused a 2 year search for a "pop". Once found was quite as new. Putting a wrench. On them all and check wouldn't hurt.

I had the same issue, turns out when I got my truck aligned, one of the mechanics forgot to tighten the bolt on my lower control arm and its was clanking everywhere, I was thinking It was my spare tire chain but no. tightened up that bolt, and the noise never happened again

Had a similar sound in my 06.. mystery solved when I found the lock key for the lug nuts had fallen through a hole in the cubby under the rear seat… and was rolling back and forth on the metal floor as the truck accelerated and stopped…

Yeah, this general class of causes -- something loose knocking around inside the cab or the bed -- is not to be underestimated.

A few weeks back I had this really concerning suspension-related knocking sound that started up shortly after driving over some reasonably bumpy section of dirt highway shoulder. I thought a tie rod was loose or something. Stopped and got out to crawl around under the truck twice during 3-hour drive.

In the end it turned out to be my passenger's metal vaccuum coffee cup tapping up and down in the pax side door pocket. It was about 1/3rd full and had a lid on it so it was in a perfect configuration to only go "clunk" on bumps of a certain magnitude, and to clunk without any metallic ringing sound.

Did you tighten them while on the ground, or did you lift it?
