The Tacoma is getting tight. 1-2 hour trips with my wife, our daughter, and two dogs is manageable, but pushing the limits with child 2 on the way.

I either need to start getting the dogs used to the truck bed, and likely create/buy some cages to keep them safe. Will need to haul luggage and what not, so dogs loaded up, caged in, then luggage.

    Or

Time to look at trading in. Looking to go from a 2014 Tacoma to a 2018-2022 Sequoia TRD Sport or TRD Pro.

Ideally I’d like to keep the truck, then save up for a few years to have both.

I’d trade with no remorse but this truck is a 6 speed with a dealer installed Supercharger, so really don’t want to part ways.

Any thoughts from the group / people that have been in similar situations?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Keep that truck or I’ll come over there and slap you.

I'll tell you this... I let go of my S/C 2005 Tacoma, and regularly regret letting it go.

That said, if this truck of yours is in Spruce Mica, let's talk

What do you think you can get in a trade for the wife and kid?

I haven’t seen many private sellers, so looking at dealers and I got a number last year for $25k. Seemed low to me though.

Just playing around. My .02 is to find a way to keep the truck if you think that you can make the finances/space requirement work. If you love the truck now, you'll kick yourself down the road when it's gone.

Since it’s not an urgent need, like having a 3rd kid, I think we have time. So likely saving up, because of what the truck is. If it was an auto off-road or sport I think I would trade since I could stumble upon one in the future.

You'll never stumble across YOURS though. I know for my own experience I knew every scratch, rattle, etc, and a 10+yr old truck will always have some stuff. I just know that if I pick up another one to fill that void it won't be "mine" for at least a while!

One can never have too many light bars.
I had a similar problem. The Tacoma was great for my wife and two dogs. But I was looking at having to pay to repaint the entire roof and hood due to the paint fading off, replace the failing A/C Compressor and alternator that are sort of normal occurances with of an 11 year old truck with 145K on the clock. I figured it was an opportunity to make the jump to a new Tundra with a kid on the way and the dealer giving me $17K for it as a trade. The added space and fancy creature comforts of a new truck are awesome but in reality I only utilize it once at week at most. I hate having to make a car payment again. I regret the simplicity and day to day driving the smaller Tacoma around. It's also a badge of honor to drive an older truck around that has seen some shit but overall has been well maintained. I still browse this site to see if the new owner of my truck pops up on here.

get a nice topper and turn that bed into usable, lockable space. dogs and stuff go back in the bed which leaves you plenty of room inside

I do have a cap already, just would like to manage keeping them safe with luggage, an potentially run a space heater with the bed outlet for winter drives.

I still have my 1986 2wd Toyota pu that I bought new. I almost sold it several times through the years as my family grew, it now serves as the best dog hauler and it’s just fun to drive. If you think you’ll regret it see if you can hold onto your current truck, a shell for your truck would take care of your dog issue

Be a woman with shoes about your cars.

    Both is the correct answer

A pickup is sure handy to have if you can swing the financial part and have a spot to keep it.

To me this is more of a financial decision than anything else. Let's just spitball it.

Used car loans are averaging about 12% right now (new is more like 7% and you should consider that). If you're going to buy a new SUV with no trade, you'd need to borrow more money, with "more" being the value of the trade. So...just for argument's sake, lets put your 2014 value at $17,000? Figure that used Sequoia at $45k? 5 year car loan?

    45-17=28K at 12 % kicks out a payment of $622

    45K at 12% kicks out a payment of $1001

Over the life of the loan, you'll pay an additional $6000 in interest in the second scenario.

So the math works out pretty handily. Basically you'd be paying a bit less than $400 per month to keep your old truck over a 60 month loan BUT the actual cost is only about $100 per month as at the end of 5 years you'd own both vehicles free-and-clear instead of just one.

The $100/month doesn't seem too bad if you can cashflow the $400.

Now...THE BEST thing to do is pay cash for the new SUV. And if you can do THAT, then disregard everything I said and just keep both.

    Damn those are terrible rates

My local credit union is at 5.99 for used, 60 month

Using that, your numbers get bumped down to $541 payment for 28k loan, $870 for 45k, with a loan lifetime interest difference of $2715

Neither of us accounted for taxes, registration, insurance, etc obviously, which can be a huge difference in some states

I just googled what interest rates are and that's the average US for 2024. 12% used. 7% new.

I haven't gotten a car loan in a long time, so you very likely have better numbers than me.

seems like you just need to invest a little time into figuring out setting it up / tying it the cage down. try it out for a few. if it doesnt work you aint out much and you know you tried to leverage all your space

for what its worth im in the dont sell it camp. how big are the dogs?

If you trade it get a 4Runner much more reliable than the unreliable over priced twin turbo sequoia and has more back room than a taco and better approach and departure angles since they have a shorter wheelbase
