Never had a leak in mine in over 6 years. Got the recall done anyway though

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.

That's my plan but I don't have any idea what the clear plastic sticker thing is that has a die cut on it.

I'm hoping somebody can post the instructions for the kit here. Anybody able to help?

Trying one more time for anyone who might have the written instructions for this from Toyota? Really wondering what the clear 3M type material is for.

    Thanks

Well, had mine done today. It didn't leak, so I was hesitant at first, but now Im confident it won't ever leak.

My ‘17 never leaked, but had the service performed 2 days ago. The new trim ring looks decent. Hopefully this is the end of it.

I’ve never investigated how to replace the lightbulb. Hopefully the new trim ring doesn’t interfere with that process if I ever have to do it in the future.

Just had mine done on my 17 Taco Sport and i did have a leak. I remember seeing a white ring on my headliner just above back sliding window but didn't think anything of it because I'm a moron and have left my sliding window open on occasion and it rained so i thought that's all it was. It was actually water staining from the 3rd brake light gasket leaking. They fixed it, cleaned my headliner and i had the truck back next morning. Glad it was caught before it caused any real damage.

Old thread but has anyone tried to replace the 3rd brake light after this recall? I know there is a sealant that comes with the kit and don't want to peel all that mess off and try to clean it if I replace it with an aftermarket 3rd brake light.

So I asked Toyota about this back in 2021. Was told they had never heard of the problem. I noticed it was leaking because I saw significant mold damage when I lifted my back seat one day. Now I cleaned it as best I could. I’m not a vehicle person by any means so I had no idea how to remove the seats or anything like that to get the rest of it. Brought it in and was charged $500 at my dealership for the gasket and labour. I finally get a email today 3 years later about this recall. So my question is do they reimburse for this will they finally clean the rest of my vehicle now what are my options ?

Hmmm. First of all, it is surprising that the dealer said they knew nothing about it, but in any case, I would take your email to the dealership, and basically tell them what you wrote here, in that you had brought it in because of the problem that was known to Toyota, but were charged for it instead of it being fixed for free. I would be surprised if they did not reimburse your money paid.

Now I'm gonna check my back seat for sure cause I have a 2021 and never noticed. I don't use the back seat at all or put anything behind or under it. Thanks for letting us know.

Are the repairs holding up for everyone? I noticed my light has condensation yesterday. I have the parts to repair again, just need to find the time to do it.

I'm thinking about trying the Morimoto 3rd brake light this time.

Well I checked my back 3rd light and no leakage so far after 3 1/2 years. I also checked for recalls on Toyota website and none for my truck with my V.I.N . So far I a very happy with me TRD Sport Premium.

i took mine in this week for the recall and was told they found a bunch of mold as a result of the leak and will need to keep my truck for 2-4 weeks to fully strip the interior down to base metal, remediate, and put back together. got a rav4 loaner for the time being.

all in all not upset since its not costing me a dollar. also, i've noticed a periodic musty/mildew smell for probably close to a year that i've never been able to eliminate. so im glad to have that mystery solved.

my question is this: is there anything I could/should do when picking up my truck again to make sure everything is all good? Seems like a PITA to do this job but not a whole lot of disassembly of mechanical systems and such so I'm not really worried about something breaking.

alternatively, is there something I should try to get the dealer to do while they have it torn down? not sure if they'd entertain doing something like that but I was thinking asking to have Dynamat sound deadening vs factory, or something along those lines?

thanks in advance for any advice :)

I just went through for the service action for 3rd brake light fix. They had my 2016 TRD for 2 months while I drove a 2024 loaner that had 80 miles on it when I got it. They found mold and according to them parts required to fix it were back ordered. They replaced the headliner, carpet and floor underlayment. All went well and I was pleased until about a week after they gave it back, my tire pressure monitor showed all - dashes all positions. I didn't put the 2 together until I started researching it to repair. It started when I drove over a really rough railroad track. Warning light came on and I got out and checked the tires with none being low. Drove home and checked air with a gauge and adjusted to nominal all were within a couple of pounds. Upon researching this I found out that the TPMS receiver lives under the headliner on the previous gen truck. I think something may have come unplugged?

I just recently started to notice leaks on the back of my cabin when I washed it a couple days ago, would I still be able to bring my 2017 Tacoma in for inspection on the recall? Or will it be waste of time
