I'm in exactly the same situation, and within the TSB range. Truck has 12,000 kms (7500 miles), towing a travel trailer for 4000 kms of it, and no tranny symptoms at all so far. Same as you I bought the Tacoma for the reliability and reputation, have had 4 Tacomas before this 2024 Sport Premium, and all have been extremely reliable. Even though nothing has gone wrong with my 2024 yet, I was planning a one month, 5000 km trip towing our travel trailer around California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah in early 2025. So yes it DOES affect me, as now am I'm rolling the dice hoping I don't get stranded in the middle of nowhere. Obviously it would be in the back of my mind the whole trip. Could you imagine getting towed to a Toyota dealership a thousand miles from home and waiting at least a month for a transmission replacement? What the hell would I do for transportation in the meantime, let alone the travel trailer?! I agree that they should do something pre-emptively and check the trucks within the VIN range, such as dropping the pan and check for shavings, completely flush it, etc. Wouldn't cost Toyota that much and at least give some piece of mind. So yes this not only affects the owners with transmissions that have failed, but also the rest of us that are driving around with fingers crossed, driving the Interstate 15 from Barstow to Vegas and rolling the dice. (excuse the pun)

You face that scenario every time you go on a trip. This time however, if the truck fails, you are going to get more support than if everything was completely unknown.

Or you could stay at the Four Seasons…

Don't know for sure, but I don't think a single transmission has shat itself past a few thousand miles.

True, and hope it makes sense that if something's wrong like shavings, it would shat sooner than later. I've got a few months until we take this trip, so more mileage on it hoping morepiece of mind. I'll keep watching all the theads and info on TW, FB groups and otherwise. Thx.

All the Tacos I’ve seen have said the transmission comes from Japan.

If so, that would be the problem, Most Aisin transmissions are made in Japan.

Maybe so, I just did a bit of research it looks like there are Aisin transmission factories in Texas, China, Brazil, Europe etc. Looks like they opened a Texas factory in 2021. When did Toyota transmissions start being problematic...lol.

Its a shame, the one thing you could always count on when buying a Toyota is that at least the transmissions were almost always not going to be an issue.

That is one of the reasons I started buying Toyotas, after having to have multiple Chevy and Ford transmissions rebuild at 100k. Engines never were an issue in the Chevy's and Fords but the transmissions were another story.

My Toyotas and Subarus' transmissions have always been solid and trouble free for the life of the vehicle.

I hope it's not going to be a slow burning trend.

Small dealer here in Birmingham, AL (Serra), while I was getting Tcase/Diffs fluid changed, service manager said he’s replaced 4 transmissions already all under 9k miles. Just saying and I didn’t even bring it up he just asked if I planned on getting a new one and said I was entertaining it.

That's interesting, I'm curious if you know if most trucks come from Baja or Guanajuato in your area.

I made the TSB helper Google form. I have about 600 response, it's split close to 50/50 on production location. 80% of the Baja trucks don't fall under the listed TSB VIN range. Whereas about 80% of the Guanajuato do fall under the vin range.

It's a very small sample size, self reported, and I have no idea where any responders purchased. But it's still kinda interesting.

    Edit:
The largest responses so far. The other's follow the same trend.

The Baja plant to my understanding produces far less Tacomas then the Guanajuato plant

I didn’t ask and he didn’t mention outright. I’d assume same part supplier so plant doesn’t matter. But I am not that vested in the issue as we just bought my wife a last year GX470 and gonna hold onto my 3rd gen for a bit and haven’t been as active in the forums.

I think you need the first part of the VIN to determine which plant–or look at the TSB near the start of this thread and see if it's below the numbers. I doubt any that fall within the TSB are sitting on the lots.
