Hello Everyone. I’ve had a 2024 since mid August after my 2018 was rear ended and totaled. A couple weeks ago I was about to leave on a road trip I closed the rear door and the glass on the rear window shattered. Looks like it shattered from the bottom up, nothing hit the glass. I don't know if it was a defect or what but comparing the rear glass on a 4th gen to a 3rd gen there is 0 protection especially around the corners of the 4th gen window and tempered glass is very weak when it there is edge damage or defects. Anyway now that im home I’m waiting to hear back from the dealership service manager to see if Toyota will cover this under warranty but they basically told me I something must have smacked into it very hard to shatter the glass and don’t seem to be entertaining that the possibility that I’m telling them the truth and the glass had a defect and shattered when it shouldn’t have which is pretty disheartening.

So now that I’m in this scenario Im seeing if it would be feasible to install a sliding rear window (I had a non slider). The window already has wiring run to the back for the defroster. Looking behind the seat there are two studs that look to be the mounting point for the window regulator/motor. I’m thinking there is a good chance I already have the connection for the rear slider power in the factory harness and then I would just need to run a switch to the front of the truck and look into how to do that. I know these trucks havnt been out long so it may be a longshot that anyone knows the answer for sure but figured someone may have some thoughts as I try to make an annoying situation somewhat more positive if I can upgrade the window while replacing it. I’d appreciate if anyone has any pointers, thank you!

Sorry to hear about your luck but I hope you can add the rear slider! That’s an upgrade I would definitely consider in the future if it’s as easy as suspected.

thanks Idaho. I was pretty bummed at first especially since I had just packed up the truck for a two week road trip and had to take everything out and take off all the plastic around the seats to vacuum the 10,000 shards of glass but it did let me get a look at what’s back there and sparked this idea.

I will definitely post if I go this direction. I have to do some more research but initially it looks much easier than previous gen’s. The glass is also cheaper, 300 for the glass, wiring and regulator, (the parts in the box labeled “1” in the diagram in my first post). Then there is the box labeled “4” which is called the “motor” and “bracket” which looks like it bolts over into the spline of the regulator/assembly and matches up with the studs I see on the rear wall of my truck (TRD OR). I just looked behind the felt on the rear wall again and there is an unused connector right under the studs that looks like it could be for the motor. If this is true it’s pretty much plug and play other than running a wire up to the front of the truck for a switch.

I really hope it is plug and play, I wonder if it’s prewired to where the switch to operate it would be. I forget where that switch even was in the one I test drove, my sport doesn’t have the slider.

That was exactly my thought, I took off the overhead console and there is another unused connector on the side where the window switch is on photos I’ve seen. I’m going to see if I can find any posts about replacing the lights or similar from someone with a sliding rear window.

Overhead connector is W20 (option connector) it has a fused ign source, battery hot source and a ground. Some use it for aftermarket dashcam.

That’s where the power for my rear window is , it’s a switch that you pull down and it opens the rear window and you push up on it and it closes it.

The switch for the rear sliding window is part of the overhead console...not the one in the pic.

You most likely need to change the overhead console in order to get the switch, but the switch can be relocated.

Thanks for the input guys. So found a video for some aftermarket lights where the truck has a rear window switch. I took my consol down and opened it up (video makes it seem much easier to get the bezel off than it was for me!). Looks to me like the circuit board is the same in the area where the switch for the rear window is between theirs and my truck. I can’t imagine Toyota is making multiple circuit boards for different options, likewise with the harness. To me it looks like the switch sits on the soldered connections and when depressed closes the circuit. If that is the case a new switch and bezel with the cutout would be all that is required in addition to the rear window parts. Still a lot of assumptions to work out and maybe some others with rear sliding windows can do some investigating but so far it seems promising.

screenshot is from this video about map lights.

I am posting from my phone so didn’t see the wiring diagram before my last post. That is a good resource, I’ll take a closer look. Thanks you!

Easy location to tap for switch (3rdGen), now to find dash location for switch...

You are a wizard and keep reading my mind! The wiring diagram confirms the connector at the back of the truck is for the rear window (red and green power wires) and I can see red and green wires in the control wiring bundle. From the video of the overhead console disassembly it looks like 84810-c090 just sits in the plastic tray. If that’s the case (assuming the circuit board for in the console is the same) the only thing that’s still unknown is the PN for the console faceplate. How are you searching for information like the switch part #? I’ve been trying to find a diagram of the center console part #s but haven't found the one I’m looking for. It may be because they don’t sell individual parts though.

If the overhead console doesn’t work I think I could fit it next to the bed light controls. I think that may be where the bed outlet switch is and I don’t have one.

You will need a way to keep it locked to the panel, the 3rdGen and other Toyota vehicles that share the same switch use a slot that locks and provides support.

What does your Taco's center console look like? the one between the front seats.

I'd be curious if this isn't a pressure issue. Per my understanding, there are vents (usually between the cab and front of the bed) that are designed to relieve pressure inside the cab when you close the door to keep this kind of think from happening.

Here is a pic of my center console. Also a screenshot from the video of the overhead console disassembly. It appears the “tray” that holds the switch’s is the same on mine so it would just be the faceplate that differs. It’s possible I could make a cutout although making it look pretty and snug may be tricky.

You could find a 3d printing place to build a single switch holder then make hole for it like so. If there's enough room behind there.

    upload_2024-10-24_21-54-43.pngupload_2024-10-24_21-56-45.png
email MESO for a single switch (rear window) 3D piece.
For rear window switch illumination you'd tie into the locking transfer switch(s) already near there.
On the manual transmission version, the spot I suggested for the sliding rear window switch is occupied by the parking brake switch. So you have the option to purchase that particular panel and modify and add the singles switch blank.(panel #3)

These are a few of the setups:
