Don't see how there is going to be a design change for just that specifically. Two simple add-ons already suggested should get protection. Big mud flaps. There are running boards that you can adjust laterally. Just move it outward to the max. Also, will serve as shopping cart protection at the mall. That is what I did with my 3G. Zero degree sliders with top panel and kick outs look like a good possibility as well.

It appears similar to bed liner. Me? I'm glad I went with $30 worth of 3M PPF for the front of my rear fenders.

Kind of wondering if it's related to the OEM tires.

The tread blocks are pretty tight which makes them perfect for grabbing onto rocks and throwing them.

Seems to be mostly the off-road trims.

Sport trims got different tires, trail hunters I don't know about.

Would be interesting to see if anybody changed out their tires for one with a slightly wider tread block regardless of offset if you're still having these problems.

There's obviously some self selection bias. If you bought an off-road model, maybe you're more likely to take it actually off pavement then someone who got an SR5 or sport.

I think you spray an adhesive/primer coat on first and then the protective texture, unlike bedliner you don't have to rough up the surface for adhesion.

I can't quite envision black goo (or a bed liner) on the front of my rear quarter panels.

Little off track but, here in San Diego I’ve seen quite a few costly raptor f150, amongst other manufacturers and models where the entire exterior body is coated with colored bedliner…
Actually looks really nice when done correctly…

I haven’t had any damage yet. Only had the truck for two weeks. But I did install Ark mud flaps and had Xpel ultimate plus put on the whole bedsides. I’ll have to see if the bottoms of my doors start getting blasted..If they do I’ll do them also

I believe the (new ones) are the Canadian version. Looks much better for protection I removed the small stock ones the day I brought my truck home

Lots of people come i here and yelling to add mud flaps lol. Great input, thanks. We all know mud flaps prevent rocks.

I started this thread because I had a 3G taco for 10 months that I drove at 40-70mph on gravel all the time for an entire summer, lifted with wider tires, and had less rocks chips on that truck when I traded it in than I did on my trailhunter within a few weeks of buying it. So something obviously changed in the design that significantly increased that chipping, and it’s not just paint. Paint doesn’t chip without rock contact and the difference between the 3G and 4G paint quality is not enough to be the source of the issue.

    Some notes:

    - The Trailhunter came with fairly reasonably sized mud flaps from factory (Canadian versions)
    - The trailhunter comes with rock sliders which do not provide any coverage beyond the bottom edge of the rocker. Since this is a ‘feature’ of the truck, most people are not immediately replacing these when they buy the truck.
    - I ordered a bunch of things in anticipation of getting set up for rock protection (wide sliders with top plate, larger flaps, booked PPF installs), but even the smallest amount of rock exposure made a surprisingly significant impact on the truck very fast. Unreasonably fast.
    - Yes, it’s a geometry issue and there are things you can do to resolve (and many are doing).
    - I’m definitely not surprised there is rock chipping from driving on gravel, but again, the low speeds at which I was driving to avoid it did nothing to limit the issue; I can’t imagine how it would look with regular speed travel all the time.

I think vitamin was right, the tires likely throw more rocks than others. These mediocre wrangler territory RT have narrow tread blocks. I’ve purchased some studded winters to go on the stock rims and will be putting new tires on new rims next summer. I’m interested to see how much crud gets thrown on the side of the truck with the winter tires vs the wrangler territory. Also think you’re right about the selection bias and type of drivers taking their trucks into various scenarios.

My parts are all in and quotes are just coming in. Toyota has ordered the new flares for my truck already. I’m hopeful to get the repaint done in the next month and a half or so. Likely just after Christmas.

Meanwhile, here are some photos showing snow/dirt coating the truck and how the pattern looks on the side. The lower front corner of the side actually catches almost no dirt or rocks compared to the area above and behind the crease. The front edge of the flares is of course a magnet for dirt/rocks; I think more is ‘catching and staying’ here now because of the textured surface due to the chipping. Of note; I’ve removed the factory sliders because I sold them ahead of installing the new Greenlane Off-road aluminum hybrid sliders.

Some items to do on my truck:
    - Get rock sliders powder coated
    - install new flaps (rally armor)
    - get truck box re-painted.
    - get PPF installed along entire box side.
    - install matte PPF on new fender flares
    - install sacrificial PPF piece over the leading edge of box side/rear quarter 3M after above steps.

The performance of flaps on your 3rd gen does not equal the performance of flaps on the 4th gen. I’ve had both 2023 and 2024 trucks and more damage faster to stock 4G trailhunter than to my lifted/modified 3G in 1/3rd of the time.

    Are you on stock tires?
TH have wider stance by ~3” so this contributes to the issue (flares and tire stance). And likely the tires making a difference. I previously owned KO2’s on a mud flap and they did throw a lot of rocks but I find the territory R/T stock on the trailhunter to throw a surprising a mount of rocks forward.

Proper placement of the flaps are critical. Make them long enough and wide enough and they will stop the shrapnel. Will they look good. NO! Will hard plastic flaps work as well as rubber flaps? NO!

When you run zero offset and wider wheels with larger than stock tires on the 3rd gen it changes the amount of damage from dirt roads vs the OEM tires/wheels. Will look similar to the 4th gen. No cure unless you install something to block what the tires throw.

I've had many sports cars with 200 treadwear "super 200s" or "endrurance 200s" for track use. Run them on the paved public streets and you will have exactly what is happening to your new 24. Just sand or minute pebbles on the streets will cause damage due to the sticky compound tires. Flaps are the only cure. Will they look good. Never!.

Doing this stuff at 50+ mph with zero offset wheels and aftermarket tires on graded gravel roads will have any gen Taco getting the paint pulverized, especially in 4Hi and drifting curves. Flaps will stop it.

I am Canadian, so Canada flaps no better, and same problem with the new design sticking out . Looks like a rare design issue with no OEM fix as I sought both dealer and Toyota Canada advice . If enough folks bring up the issue I am sure they will come up with a fix for all of us
