So..7 years later i never noticed until today :annoyed:this 2nd air filter in the lid of my air filter box. I never knew there was another filter there. It looks like its glued or something into the lid but i can't think it doesn't need replacing after 200,000km of driving and winters etc etc.

Is this replaceable or cleanable ?

Not really cleanable, and not replaceable. 2nd gens had a similar setup as well.

6" lift and all that goes with it
I just noticed this yesterday as well. Napa, CQ, Autozone and Oriellys had no idea. I went to Toyota here in Kona and the parts guy said it is a non serviceable part and to replace it you would need to replace the whole lid with the sensor for a measley $845. I laughed and walked away. Pathetic really. Anyone ever just ripped it out? Results?

It's a carbon filter for gas fumes. (Emissions)
You can't replace it. It's not removable.

If you change the air filter regularly, you will never have an issue.

carbon filters for controlling gas fumes coming out of the engine on shut off shouldn't need to be replaced since they are behind the actual engine air filter that is replaceable. Also required for CARB in CA and any other states with emissions inspections, this is also why a lot of aftermarket intakes that delete this filter piece aren't legal in some places

It's not intended to be removed.
And wasn't made to be "removable".

One can do anything they desire.
I tend to leave stuff alone. I have enough issues already.
I don't like creating issue. I wait until I have an issue.

BTW, that is a nice clean engine bay.

Haha I was just being a smart ass. Thx man, it's got a few more things in it now, but at the time I did this, it was pretty much stock.

And yeah it's not 'removable' but you can remove it. Consensus was it was mostly a 'because California' thing, and I tend to hate everything that exists because of that reasoning. After removal, when I took my leaf blower to it, I couldn't feel anything coming thru so I figured it wasn't doing me any favors. Haven't had anything bad happen since removing it, and no previous vehicles I've owned ever had one.

Yeah. They don't want fuel vapor to vent straight to the atmosphere.
All vapor is "supposed" to be filtered in someway. On our trucks, it's through the carbon canister at the tank.
When the system runs the vapor purge, it sends it to the intake. And they don't want any of the "vapor" to escape through the air intake at the filter.
If the system is working properly, that shouldn't happen. As the intake is under vacuum to the engine.

    Redundancy. But whatever.......

Not even on small engine equipment. The furl tank on a lot of new mowers is now vented to the air intake at a minimum.
I think some even have a "smaller simplified" emission system.

I'm not necessarily directing the comments to you.
Just putting it out there for others that might want to know "why" it's even there.

Leave it as is and keep up with regular filter changes.
