I know a popular mod is to upgrade the filter housing from the stock plastic one to an aluminum one.

Apparently if the metal tube in the middle comes out, the whole housing should be replaced.

Have a funnel ready. The first time I dropped the plug, the stream ricocheted from the bottom of my pan, over the edge, and onto the garage floor.

It really does rocket out fast.

The valve will be great for next time. This time, you need something to gentle the flow a hair.

Oh, and always have two rolls of shop towels on hand. A pro will use two squares or less. But when things go sideways, you'll be grateful that there's a roll by your side.

I change my fluids in my street (residential neighborhood with very little traffic). When I am finished, I have smaller stains than what is under my neighbor's junker work van. Just wanted to post this picture to prove a funnel is a great tool.

How many of us are consistently STILL a "pro" after the time-gap between oil changes?

Put some wide cardboard down for possible splash/spills. Have at least a sixpack on hand for after you finally get the dealer shop over torqued filter housing off. Slam two beers, then crawl back under to finish the job.

Illustration on filter box shows how to seat the o-ring.

The process is actually pretty easy if you plan it out. A lot of good advice above. To recap (plus to add a few things):

    1) Spread cardboard/paper/plastic around to capture drips.
    2) Make sure you are opening the engine oil drain plug and not the trans.
    3) Have a big enough container to capture all of the oil. (Once you install the Fumoto this is less critical). Also loosen the filler cap to allow better draining.
    4) Have rags and gloves available.
    5) Drain the filter housing before removing. If you have the Motiv-X tool, this is pretty easy. The plastic tool that comes with the filter is more difficult.
    6) Install the filter housing o-ring correctly as shown on the filter box. Avoid over-tightening the filter housing when re-installing.
    7) Make sure that the old crush washer has been removed from the oil pan plug area before you install your Fumoto valve. Don't forget the retainer clip.
    8) Rough up the reading area of your dip stick to improve being able to actually see the level. Search the forum for posts about this.

    Good luck.

I wouldn’t buy an expensive pan since he’s installing a Fumoto which will allow him to drain the oil directly into a jug on subsequent changes.

Good point. Another reason why the Fumoto will counter that splashing once its installed.

Ok thanks for all the advice. I did change my oil. I don't like the additional parts for the filter. It's just more things for me to mess up. I know it's still simple, just a personal thing, I'm forgetful.

My torque wrench wasn't working well and I torqued to less than 30 for the drain plug. It's brand new and maybe it was user error.

I was being super clean until I fumbled the oil filter drain tube and flung oil everywhere.

The 0.1-0.2 difference from 6 quarts is super irritating.

No drips as of yet so I think I did ok.
