I thought about oil analysis but I DIY my oil change for less $$ then a analysis so I figure just do it maybe a little more often and I'll be ok.

 

Planning on going the distance...

For the truck, oil change every six months.
For retirement, lubricate all joints with Jack Daniels.

 

I buy the spray cans. For full discloser... never did any rust proofing for the first 14 years on this truck... just started a little over a year ago before the suspension upgrade.

 

Sounds like a plan !

Just did my 6 month oil change - only 2,346 miles - next one in April.

 

I have a take home car for work and don’t put many miles on my Tacoma. I used to change my oil every 6 months because I wouldn’t reach the mileage. I recently switched to changing my oil every 3 months because when I do use my Tacoma it’s for short trips around town, so my engine never heats up to the point of my piston rings expanding. As a result, there was a trace amount of gasoline in my oil and that’s when I switched to every 3 months. The change may not make a difference and if so I’ll go back to every 6 months.

This is the only thing that I do on a monthly basis, all other maintenance is done via mileage using the “severe schedule” as apposed to the “normal schedule” for maintenance. I too do all my own maintenance and change everything, to the point my brother-in-law makes fun of me.

 

Thanks for the post - it does raise a question - when I go out to the store temperature goes up to the same as when I drive say 50 miles so as long as the temp is at the same operating level does it matter how long it is at that level to expand the piston rings - Hope the question isn't too confusing. Thanks for any reply/information

 

To be honest I’m not sure, but I believe if you’re doing trips on the interstate as apposed to just driving around town you should be fine. Most of my trips are short and around town on 35 mph roads.

 

It's more about getting the oil hot enough (and keeping it hot long enough) to evaporate moisture and fuel that naturally accumulates in the oil at low temperatures than it is about getting the coolant up to temp, the oil takes longer to get up to temp than the coolant does especially when the engine isn't working hard like when idling around town.
Coolant is regulated at a set temperature by the thermostat and comes up to temp pretty quick if things are working as they should but the oil just warms up mainly by absorbing heat from the inside of the engine and takes longer to heat up than the coolant does.

Things that cause oil degradation are explained pretty good in this video, if in doubt about how your oil is doing either just change it or get an oil analysis and see where it's at.

Similar, 2720 miles when I did my 6 month oil change recently.

A couple things I do to prevent issues like milky oil or smutz in the fill cap. Every Saturday and Sunday morning, first drive I leave it in a lower gear to get the rpms up to help get the engine hot. Additionally, if it’s been a long period of time, 2 months or so, since I got it on the highway for a long drive, I’ll go for a drive on the highway going nowhere for 30-60 minutes. Towards the end of this drive, I’ll floor it a couple times. Fill it with premium and some marvel mystery oil or jectron first. This works, I never see any sign of milky oil and the fill cap looks good.
