If you do move for whatever reason, im sure there will be a self help part of their website. No one should ever assume but now you have your answer of being able to reach out to your tuner or someone on here (mostly @JustDSM).

No troubles! The CARB EO is only applicable to the 3G 3.5L (at this time).

I probably should have asked this in my original post. How often do you update your tuning schedule? I see you are primarily up the hill in NV. but, come down the hill to Sactown sometimes.

And because forums are for pics.

You'll need to coordinate/communicate with your local retailer for schedules. We don't control that centrally. Please see the link below for the interactive map of our retail network.

What is the redline on the OTT tune? Noticed today flooring the truck, looked down and saw rpms at roughly 6300 rpm and let off immediately because it hadnt shifted yet.

Are you in ECT and or S-Mode/Manual mode?

The Engine Rev Limiter (fuel cut) is set to ~6800RPM, however your shift schedule commands the shift when at WOT, much earlier than that. Specifically, our calibration is configured for a 1-2 WOT upshift at an output shaft RPM ~1385. This is a little bit higher than factory, so it will rev out a bit more than "stock". That's normal.

Also, if you're in S-Mode/Manual mode, it will allow you to bring the engine to 6800 RPM.

Ok that makes sense. I had no idea the redline was raised so i was surprised. I was not in ect or s mode.

What rpm would you be worried about throwing rocker arms or other failures?

I noticed the almost redline when I was testing out the medium (ECT on) with my tuner, @TK-421 in Orange County. It was wild.

These engines are also used in the Camry, which coincidentally also have a 6800RPM stock rev limit. There's no need to worry about this engine below 7000RPM.

We've not seen any signs of trouble with our development truck at 7400RPM. We obviously don't push our customers' vehicles that hard, but the motor handles 7400 just fine.

Does the power fall off at those higher rpms or is it pretty linear?

With the superchargers (Maggy/Procharger) it made more power the higher you rev’d it.

N/A power flatlines and falls off.

I was on the fence about getting my 2019 OTT tuned, but I’ve decided to stick with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.”

I recently sold my 2007 Tacoma (250,000 miles, 17 years) and purchased a low mileage 2019. Coming from the 4.0 L and 5 speed I initially thought the 2019 was often eager to upshift and I did in fact experience some of the gear hunting many describe. I brought the truck to Toyota and had them reflash with the newest software under a TSB update. I’ve now driven the truck approximately 8,000 miles, and it literally never upshifts early or hunts for gears. The transmission shifts smoother and more appropriately than my 2007. The throttle sensitivity is great as well. Drives amazing, no issues whatsoever. I run premium fuel. Tow, haul and do a lot of highway and city driving, trips to my cabin etc. I run 265/70R17 Michelin Defender LTX.

I do understand that running larger, heavier tires and hauling a lot of gear or adding additional weight would impact how the truck drives; and the OTT tune could definitely improve the trucks ability to cope with those demands. I also understand that some of the earlier 3rd gens may be running older software and do indeed have room for improvement.

What I don’t understand is close to stock trucks that are 2019 and newer having issues with shifts and holding gear on hills or climbing on highways. I drive a balanced mix between somewhat aggressive throttle control and simply rolling into it in effort to maintain efficiency. I don’t use ECT although I have tested it thoroughly. I live in an area where no roads are flat. Highways are climbs and descents one after another. I experience zero hesitation or early upshifts, zero issues whatsoever compared to my 2nd gen which I drove for 17 years. I love my truck, it’s great. Perhaps I got lucky, but I highly doubt it. I believe if you’re looking for something, you’ll find it. By that I mean it seems to be somewhat a self-fulfilling prophecy. Tuning the truck right off the Toyota lot I do not understand; without even driving the truck, concluding that it will shift poorly and hunt for gears, with no low end power. I see it in the language used to describe why the tune is necessary. Everyone has read about the issues on TacomaWorld and is convinced their truck also needs the tune. I’ve read over and over the same phrases being parroted in YouTube comments, TacomaWorld, Reddit, etc. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In addition, I’ve seen several questions and comments in this thread avoided by OTT. No response. Just ignored. And I suspect I know why.

I’m not implying the OTT tune doesn’t improve some 3rd gen Tacomas depending on the year, setup, use case etc. I’m just sharing my thoughts and experience. My truck is great, and I’m a mechanical engineering technologist (manufacturing) by trade. I work on my own vehicles. I pay a lot of attention to how my truck performs and I would be objectively critical if it was appropriate. As stated I did initially notice many of the issues described with the transmission behaviour and throttle. Those issues very quickly disappeared. My risk vs benefit analysis can be simplified down to a couple points. Toyota has designed the vehicle with safety factors in mind, which are comprised when you’re doing any modification. Is increasing throttle sensitivity and altering the ECU/TCU software really worth it in a truck that already drives perfectly. I’d like to keep my truck for years to come and the answer for myself is clear.

Maybe they finally got the TSB right. On my 2016, I had them flash 3 different revisions and they all reverted to having issue with gear hunting, especially in the mountain highways.
