Swapping a 3rd gen interior into a second gen How-to (UNFINISHED)

@Tony79 Are you converting the ebrake to a handle or keeping the pedal?

 

I'm probably keeping the pedal. I noticed that the brake cable is in the way just haven't figured out where to reroute it

I'm seeing out how it works to the left of the shift assembly. It's kinda awkward positioning since I'll need to use washers to elevate/make the cable's support pieces flat to avoid it getting caught on anything

Haven't done it yet but will. Basically thinking I'll just switch the e-brake and shift assembly's positions then drill/tap new mounting holes where needed and fill any unused holes with caulk.. I switched to finishing the dash so I can get the shift assembly alignment right and some body work done before it gets too cold/snows.

How're you handling the passenger airbag? I expected to keep the 2nd gen airbag but the 3rd gen dash has a different angle and mounting bracket. Picked up a 3rd gen dash airbag today but the connectors are different... should've double checked wiring diagrams before spending $85

Planning to recheck the 2nd gen airbag mounting tomorrow and may just decide to modify the 3rd gen dash airbag slot to fit the 2nd gen airbag. Figure something is better than none... maybe for the rare occasions I have a passenger I'll ask them to sign a waiver or record a video acknowledging the risk if they decide to ride in the front after I let them know lol

 

The airbag should be the same connectors

 

Looked like 3rd gen has an additional connector. I'll grab pictures this weekend

 

I believe that connector is for the other airbag that goes below the glovebox

Seeing all the confusion makes me feel awful for how long I’ve taken to respond to this thread!

for the shift assembly lights I jumped off the instrument cluster wiring to get signal 12v for the shifter illumination.

super easy if you have extra colour coded wiring! Unfortunately the cluster receives its 12v Comms from the transmisson itself and the shift assembly has nothing to do with the illumination of the clusters shift indicator.

The way I did it is by no means the best. Just the best I could come up with with no direction on how to do it! Lol

 

I was able to make the 2nd Gen airbag fit into the dash with just slight modification.



The mounting hole on the third Gen dash is the same side as what the 2nd Gen required but it just needs two small holes cut out for the air bag tabs.

this way you can avoid getting into splicing SRS wires which in my experience is a horrible idea

Yeah the connectors ON the airbag are different but I meant the 4 pin yellow connector to the airbag wiring harness which I believe Tony79 also was talking about. It is the same connector but different pinout. 2nd gen on left:

I thought to add those holes but noticed the mounting angles differ with the 3rd gen which is angled up more (understandably since they have the lower airbag).

The 3rd gen dash is fully seated into those firewall slots. Obviously it's not going to fit perfectly but definitely an important point for people to consider if they're thinking of converting
