V-8 Tacoma - Would You?

I was looking at the 4Runner on Toyota.com and noticed that it has a V8 option. So it got me thinking, if the 4.7 was available for the Taco would you get it?

I think I would. I once had a 1995 Dakota with the 318 and that thing was a rocket. Although looking at the output rating the 4.7 only has 24 more hp but has 40 ft/lb of torque.

Remember a good rule of thumb - There is no replacement for displacement.

 

Probably not. There isn't a significant enough power advantage in the 4.7 to entice me, especially considering the Camry has more HP. 0-60 in about 7 seconds is pretty good for a truck the size of the Tacoma, IMO, and if you want to tow a lot you should probably go for the Tundra.

 

Go supercharger over a 4.7L.It makes the V6 very quick.
30 lbs more torque and 44 more HP than the 4.7L.

 

no, i personally wouldnt want a v8 unless i had a full size truck, my v6 is more than enough...although it definitely would be fast

 

1 cylinder is all I need the way I drive. If I had a V8, I'd just pull the spark plugs out of 7 cylinders and putz around like that.

 

Clutch replacement is part of my routine maintenance. Every 5k miles I change the oil, rotate tires, swap out the clutch and rebuild the tranny.

 

I think at least it should be an option for the X-Runner since that is supposed to be the "street" version of the truck.

 

I would. Only if its the 4.7 V8 not the 5.7 thats in the new Tundra's. The gas milage isnt that much different than our V6. I dont care about the speed or acceleration, but it would be nice to have to be able to get better towing.

 

yeah if they made it for the reg cab. HELL YEAH i would get a V8

 

Its not all about Horsepower......Look at the difference in torque. Towing would be much easier and also there would be more of an advantage offroading.

You're talking about 40 ft lbs. Not an impressive increase at all when you're talking about a V6 vs a V8. And, you know that Toyota would charge a premium to put that V8 in the Tacoma. Would the extra money be worth 24hp and 40ftlbs? I guess it depends on what that amount of money would be.

 

Yeah, I'd rather have a blown v6 vs a v8.

Yeah, a v8 rumble sounds nice, but I like the whine of a blower a bit better

 

Only if it had a bigger towing capacity.

With a bigger engine, requires beefier transmission, beefier axles, etc etc etc.

If they slapped a 4.7L in the current tacoma with no other changes - the towing capacity wouldn't change much (if any) at all.

So, why bother?

My purpose in owning my Tacoma is to have an everyday vehicle that gets decent fuel mileage, is fun to drive and I can use as a truck. I believe that the V6 fits the bill for me. I currently own a GMC with the Duramax so towing while an issue, is not a big issue for me. I have owned a 4runner with the V8 and was not pleased with the mileage, but it was fun to drive.

 

More low end torque? Sounds like a deal to me. That and I love the V8 Rumble. Specially with a CAI and an exhaust it would sound excellent.
