I would check first that the necessary vehicle adaptations would be possible, as that might immediately rule it out. If it does not, Toyota's warranty on Hybrid systems is 8 years. It's a separate warranty than the normal 3yr/5yr non-hybrid components.

Yes, they are very reliable long term from my experiences. There are always people talking about the price to replace a failed hybrid battery in 5 years and this just not happen. The reason Toyota will warranty a hybrid system so long is that it should not fail in the time frame (Fed law says they have to for 8 years / 100,000 miles). I had a gen 2 Prius for 11 years and it had just over 160,000 miles on it. Brakes, tires, one front wheel bearing, oil changes and gas is all that I ever did to that car. Nothing else went wrong until my daughter put it into a power pole. I had no noticeable battery degradation in the hybrid battery. Toyota put limitations on the battery usage through software which limits discharge and over charge on the hybrid battery which is what extends the life drastically.

I certainly would not be concerned about buying a hybrid for longevity, but it certainly depends on it working for your specific situation.

LOL. You should see the vinyl B pillar wraps on mine (3rd Gen). Not good. These are the types of things that dont happen with Toyotas built in Japan.

I'm not an owner of a hybrid and I am reading this thread because I just heard about the Tacoma hybrid and I am "hybrid curious". I've got a 2017 Tacoma with about 35K miles on it and I would consider upgrading if I could convince myself it was worth the money. My truck is a 4x4, 6' bed on extended cab and I can have a towing capacity of 6400 lbs. I use Fuelly to track mileage and my truck has averaged 18.3 mpg over it's life. When I saw the specs of the Tacoma truck I will admit that I was very disappointed to see the claimed combined MPG of 24, I was hoping for better. Since I am an MPG over torque person (that said, I don't want to give up torque or towing capacity), I guess this first iteration of the hybrid truck may not be it for me yet, so maybe I will have to wait for a plug-in version of the truck, or a plug-in Ranger in the US (both of which are uncertain at this point. Sigh! :)

Random aside: Hybrid vehicle battery access.

Did this the other day just to look around and understand for the day 3ish years from now that the 12v will need changing.

Access is by three two-step push pins along the front edge right below the cushion. Spaced about center of each passenger seat position. Easiest removal is with a plastic trim tool with a forked front. Once all three are fully removed, the two parts (it is still a 60/40 split) will flip up. I had no issues with the seat bottoms just staying vertical on me. Note, that if you hear a tearing sound when lifting the first one, it's OK. There a fabric flap that spans the seat break and it Velcros to the underside of each bottom.

12v on driver's side as referenced in the manual. Off gas vacuum tube is attached on the negative post side towards the driver's seat. You'll have the trim tool, and you'll need a 10mm socket for disconnecting the terminal posts.

There's also a small fuse/relay setup on the passenger side for those interested.

1300 miles and no issues so far. I’m still worried about transmission issues though. I can’t tell if the truck shifts weird or if it’s just the hybrid switching the motors. I’d say it’s definitely not 100% smooth when accelerating from a stop. But maybe it’s all in my head.

i got about 1500 miles and took it off road twice since. Bend my exhaust and it fell off on trail, so had to do a quick fix on a trail. Im also in the same boat for transmission, but i didnt notice any accelerating issues or anything in that sort.

Picked up a iForce Max Hybrid yesterday. I drove it a couple of weeks ago, along with a regular non-hybrid version. Initial impressions, definitely wanted the hybrid for 0-30 MPH acceleration, and maybe a bit quieter. Seating is noticeably better than my 2021.

Backing up a bit, I had an appointment not too far from the dealership and decided to stop in and see what they had on the lot. Two hybrids. I was surprised the one I drove weeks ago was still on the lot (grand total 34 miles on the odometer, no one was even test driving it?). ("Sales kind of slow?" I asked. "We never sell as many as quickly as we would like". Uh yeah, I bet!) So now I am comparing the one with only heated seats as an option vs two upper and full fledged OffRoad option package ($4640) and the other with the Premium option package. (Premium vented seats, moonroof, electric tailgate, digital mirror, JBL front speaker, etc $8800).

On my old OffRoad 2021 I had a self dimming mirror with Homelink for my garage remote along with a motor adjustable drivers seat. The lower trim 2024 did have the larger screen, heated seats, and an illuminated (essential! :bored:) front emblem. No Homelink on the self dimming mirror, and driver seat with manual 8 way adjustment. For about $10K less than the premium one onsite. $50K vs $60K outside of taxes. The salesperson told me I could wait for something else, but of all the potential hybrid allocations coming in, all the OffRoad hybrid versions had the Premium option pack. He told me that he could try to delete things mid manufacturing. "Really, you can do that?" "Well, not really... but we can try". I purchased my 2021 from this dealer (Marysville Toyota, Marysville WA. MSRP only, even on Pro), so I trusted the sales process, and laughed over trying to change an allocation.

Considering the options I actually wanted, I think I can just install a smarter Homelink mirror and be good. As I put some miles on the new one I will check back. I do not notice any drivetrain clunkiness during shifting, stopping, or starting from a stop. I have not touched any standard settings (yet).

    Cheers.
