I am replacing the driveshaft carrier for the second time in a short period of time, both times it failed was due to an excessive payload of 3 dirtbikes (one on a hitch loader) and too much camping gear. The excessive load obviously affected where the bushing on the carrier bearing sits on the driveshaft causing it to tear and pop out the front of the bracket.

My question is about removing the tabs on the replacement carrier bearing bracket. When it failed the second time I decided to remove those tabs so it could allow it to sit farther forward, and it lasted a surprisingly long time like that even with the bushing visibly torn. I'm wondering if I should remove the tabs on this newer one also and scoot it further forward than the tabs allow? Why are they there in the first place? the OEM one does not have them and they restrict its placement to as far back as the slots allow the bolts to sit.

It's not easy to see but I feel like it sits in a much happier place in the first photo; further forward with the tabs removed, but cutting them off does feel wrong as they must be there for a reason. Is that reason not applicable to installation on a Tacoma perhaps? They do not fit in the nearby holes drilled into the mounting bracket. Any advice? I often haul 1-2 dirtbikes plus gear but won't be doing a third again.

Did you exceed the payload capacity? Is that an aftermarket carrier bearing. I’ve carried payload capacity many times and never broke a cb.

My understanding was that they "helped" you hang it/support it while you got the bolts started. But that could just be the usual Internet misinformation.

I was thinking the same thing about them. The carrier bearing as it currently sits seems too far back. The hanger tabs seem to prevent you from adjusting forward/backwards for optimal alignment however. I just did mine a few weeks ago and was revisiting the thought of cutting them off or at least bending them down while I was under there today.

Hopefully someone with more expertise chimes in on this.

I can't see what else they would be for especially the way they curve back in like that but they are not even close to reaching the nearby holes drilled into the support. They were surprisingly easy to break off from the spot welds, I was initially just attempting to bend them since I had limited tools but they both came off very easily allowing me full range of the slots that they were restricting me from utilizing.
I think I will remove these as well. The oem only had directional "ears"if I recall
