Hi all, it's been a while since I had a Tacoma and I'm in the market for another one. I'm thinking 2011 4D TRD.

All the talk I hear concerning frame rust and rot has wondering if I give up on the used truck market.

How does the Toyota Frame Replacement program work and is it still going on today?

As far as I have read. You may be too late, you will have to pay to swap the frame out.

Why is your frame turning into a shipwreck?

If not Throw some rust protection of your choice. POR, fluid film, bee wax, oil.

I don't have the truck yet. I'm just crossing my T's and dotting my I's and planning on "what if".
    Thanks

That waxy black crap they were putting on the early second gens was the worst. I had an '09 that they applied it to and it was rusting even faster underneath. I had to dump that truck.

I'll agree; if I saw that stuff I'd run far away!

Buy one without rust from West or South. Then treat the frame inside and out with waxoyl every couple years or so. You'll be fine. Nothing wrong with used trucks, just used trucks from salt states. We love California because they keep old trucks nice for the rest of us!

Do not buy from rust states. There are lots of vehicles in non-rust parts of the country.

Even Cali is a risk. A guy here posted up his truck which has lived near the Cali beach all its life and was just as rusted out as one from Ohio.

Where I’m at scammy dealerships spray paint over rust and call it “rust protection”

If you buy from the rust belt area make sure it has been coated with a rust preventative. I'm in Minnesota, and my 2010 is in really good shape for a rust belt truck, but I took preventative measures and yearly checked it for bad areas even before Toyota issued the recall or service bulletin. It's not perfect, but I'll get years of service out of it.

A couple weeks ago I noticed some brown looking areas on My 2010 Regular Cab 4x4 Frame. I took a hammer to it and the frame is gone under the doors on both sides... The dealer told me its a no go on a frame replacement.. He said I can call Toyota but did not seem to enthusiastic I could tell he was just trying to get rid of me. I asked him when was the last frame they did. He said he couldn't remember its been so long.. FYI I never got any recall notices for undercoating or frames.

I want to say that first of all I married into a Chrysler family who are loyal Jeep buyers.

But you went from a company that can’t make a frame that doesn’t rust to a company that can’t weld the frame properly.

Clean trucks do exist in the rust belt. You just have to carefully inspect and take your time looking at every one. Bring a good flashlight and somehing to tap on the frame a bit.

    OK.............

Michigan, one of the rustiest rust states.

    Good luck finding better anywhere.

There are literally thousands of better trucks for sale than that

Because yours doesn’t meet half the requirements- being for sale

Frame deal was 12 yrs from in service date, which you are well past.

Whoever serviced your Tacoma was negligent in observation and prevention recommendations.

If the Jeep is neglected like the Tacoma was it won't last the same 15 years.
