Good choice haha, the std ones are even shorter than I described haha. Ext travel is about .5" over stock with them vs 1.75 with every other CO brand. The out of box tune likely won't impress you, but thankfully everyone and their mom tunes Kings so you should be good. Someone in NM does that locally I'm sure.

I'm curious though, is the price that good compared to other options? I mean King is good if you're getting custom COs and shocks and tuning them, but like I wouldn't ever use their stock application options just because they're proven to be lacking, what's motivating this choice?

for sure haha, that's an easy fix at least on both ends. Your icons can be tuned and resprung with 600s or 650s for less than new kings though. And they have more usable shaft travel

I know what you mean since i swapped to 63s as well. I ordered my rears from accutune and feel there may be not enough compression valving as well. Im sure they work good with regular 1st gen lift leaf packs but are undervalved with 63s. May send em in for my free revalve. Currently reworking my tent setup again to something lighter though so I my wait to see what loaded weight looks/feels like before jumping to a revalve.

Like I said I remember how smooth my friends second gen was after we put kings in his second gen. If I remember it was the difference between digressive vs progressive valving? I need something softer so my mind is running to that.

And probably because I've just thought kings were cool, and I'm fitting logic to around the emotional want.

Maybe that's something I can do if the kings don't fit the bill. Not having a garage/backup car really complicated things when I'm too stubborn to take it to a shop to do the work for me.

2nd gens suspension is pretty different and they got the benefit of Kings R&D department learning too, our stock application valving has been shipping with the same tune since 2006 though and it reportedly can be made good (like any CO) but out of the box is not so much. The Icons are digressive, but like anything else that can be tuned around, actually @Bandido did it recently. You're also way oversprung so 700# combined with digressive valving isn't exactly a good combo.

Fair, I still think they're cool, so I just bought a set of 2.5x14 adjustable resi shocks for my new* rear setup

*setup still very much a work in progress

My recommendation would be not to rush here. Everything in the "overlanding" is going to be "on sale" in exactly 1 month for BF.

I've been changing the valving pretty often since 2020 actually, pretty pleased with the current ride...
Looking back thru the messages I agree with most of what Zane has said.

Elka - bad - they have some really trick stuff at the top end of their lineup (magnesium housings, 4-way adjustability), but the bottom end (probably what you would buy) is lower quality than similarly priced king/fox/ads

Kings - to me these are just the basic progressive shock now, I know the TC crew love to use them, and their package on the 4g was awesome, depending on whose package you buy you will get a different product

ADS - also basic progressive shocks but with an internal top-out bumper - never ran a set on a 1g but loved them on a 3g

Fox - they have some of the best tech available, but the basic packages are still just a basic progressive shock, but with more robust seals than kings come with typically, DSC is an excellent add-on imo

Icon - I bought into the digressive valving hype back in 2014 or so, definitely its more annoying than anything, it makes the handling feel good, and the big hits feel OK, but the washboard/small stuff is extra bad... but if you already own these, just revalve and roll with it. 600# 14" springs will work great even with bumper/winch

You can 100% get any size you want with stock mounts. You just need to call them. They build in house and ship direct. Or contact a rep that actually is good like MCM.

    Who the hell is that?

Do you have plans for a winch? if so I'd go for 650s, they ride good if you're not cranking them down for lots of lift.

    Is it stink bug now?

No idea about de arcing, pulling a leaf seems much easier.

Don't think thats just the shocks. The suspension geometry in a 2nd is FAR better than our 1st gens. They inherently ride MUCH smoother.

My experience with Kings COs was not good. Yeah, they are pretty...for a while. But in the long run that matters little. Their main issue IMO is they are too short. Even the extended version is too short. They will become your limit strap.

And I originally thought the valving was ok and the ride was good. Now, looking back and after having the ADS, I just didn't know any better.

    That's a good point.
What do you mean by whose package? I was looking at wheelers and headstrong, part numbers are the same, I would assume they are the same.

And on paper it seems easy enough to put new coils on the icons and have them retuned. In practice, I can't have the truck inop for any period since it is my only vehicle. A bolt in project is easier to do in the street which is all I have. Buuuut once the icons are off and the kings on I can always have them rebuilt and try them out later. But you are right the ride is annoying, it wasn't bad when my truck was heavy on 35s. The solution was always to go faster to go smoother, but sometimes I don't want to do that
It's me! I am just teasing, since I moved to NM I stopped going by Ben.

No plans for a winch, or skids, or sliders, so the 600s should be right on the money, if a bit soft for no sway bar.

Stance now is perfect but when the front drops with a new coilovers, it will stink bug, and it is too tall for most of the shelf rear shocks.

I understand that King themselves have a base valving and shock dimension(this is whats sold wholesale to distributors), Accutune will ship different valving sets on request, Total Chaos also has their own valving in the same dimension shock as King.

Why are you so offended by me going by my middle name?
Y'all can call me either way, was just messing with you. Been very good to have a fresh start on a lot of things, name change a big one. Always liked my middle name more but never had the courage to change until this year.
