Dirty cabin air filter????

I had never changed the cabin air filter on my truck since i bought it and Dammmmmm It was Dirty!!!! lol

 

The manual suggests you change it every 30k miles. Just did mine and it wasn't all that dirty compared to other vehicles I've owned.

my truck had just hit 60k and its the firt time its done.. That thing even had leafs in it. Now for next time i know to do it sooner..

I only change mine when it LOOKS like it needs it.

I find it interesting how we as a population were able to survive for so many years without "cabin air filters", and now everyone thinks they cannot live without them.....

I am in no way discounting the usefulness of them, particularly for people with allergies, but the mechanics at most shops make them out to be something that you will not be able to live without and you should change them regularly. What a load of BS......

 

As I learned from some of the earlier posts, if you're carefull you can wash and reuse the filter. Worked great for me.

 

OP, just curious, how much did the dealer charge for the filter?

 

Yep, plus the dirty filter will work better as an actual filter than the clean one... just doesn't let as much air flow past.

Mine looked like that at 30,000 miles. I swapped in a clean one when I did the blower motor tick fix. Dealer charged me $20 for the filter...

I have no idea how much my dealer wants for a filter, but the local Jiffy Lube gets $39.99. Well, at least that's how much they charge if anyone is stupid enough to buy one from them. When the "tech" told me that, I had to ask twice just to make sure I heard the price correctly.... then I immediately said, Ummm, No.

 

I paid around $25

 

Even $20 and $25 seems crazy. Those things are so cheap feeling. I just took mine out and looked at it. At 15K its still fine. $39.99 at Jiffy Lube is insane. I'm sure they pay less than 10 bucks a pop for them. I'm about to open up a quick lube with those kinda profit margins.

 

I'm sure they get them for far less than $10. Hell I can buy them for under $4.

 

And I remember the days when the cabin air intake had a screen over it to keep from getting all those leaves and stuff (or critters) inside. Then the filters weren't needed, although the vents and everything used to get caked with dust back then too. So we're still better off now. But spending $20 once for a lifetime filter isn't so bad (don't waste $20 on the disposable filters).

Behind the glove box. You have to remove the glove box and there's a plastic door holding in the filter.
