Hey guys - I had my oil changed today (break in oil) and I think they overfilled. Dipstick is a pain to read accurately but I may siphon out some oil. In any event, I was looking at the oil pressure gauge (which I barely used before) and it now fluctuates from 2/4 bars to 3/4 bars depending on RPM etc. Is that high?

had it changed where? at a "jimmy lube / walmart" or the dealer???
wouldnt be taking at $65k+ truck to anywhere but the dealer..
    but thats me...
Sure they know specifically how much they put in & you can verify quarts specs / capacity..
as in make the phone call if youre questioning any wrong doing...
    you paid for a service..
vs taking matters into your own hands, as you already said its hard to read the stick....
oil change if they used the right weight oil, didnt effect your oil pressure.

Dealership where I bought the truck.

I’m just asking what other people’s oil pressure readings are on 24 Tacomas. Like I said I’m getting 2-3 bars out of 4.

Done at dealer, I wouldnt be sucking oil out.
If truly feel its overfilled, have them double check & correct.
Im sure your oil gauge readings are normal...
    But, yes, other can check..

I will tell you to not stress about it. Check the oil after running it and letting it sit for 5 minutes. If you check after hours it shows high.

The pressure is supposed to fluctuate, its normal. As long as its not pinned high or low.

Dealers use lube kids same as lube shops, they are no better.

I understand. Really trying to just get anyone to just tell me how many oil pressure bars they see on their instrument guage. I see 2-3 out of 4. This is all I’m trying to do, to assess if my pressure is on the high side.

To check oil level properly, every engine is different...
The owners manual will give you a specific procedure to follow.
Sometimes it allow vehicle to sit overnight, may say let site for 7 minutes after turning off, etc...
Some will say let site for atleast 20 minutes..
But if not done properly it usually reads low, not high like your stating...
Most dealers fill using bulk oil guns so if you had a careless tech, overfilling is possible.

Again, I wouldnt mess with it, drive by shop, suck down a couple coffees while you wait..

dont fixate on your oil gauge, its very inaccurate at best, theyre truly designed that way...
all that matters is, do you have pressure or not...

Oil pressure relies on many variables, it runs lower pressure in hot engines and hot climates, in colder areas it will run higher. As long as its in range, its fine, no two trucks will show the same.

You can't make decisions without accurate information. Until you can accurately read the dipstick, don't add or remove any oil.

Curious if any documents show the 'pressure bar' value. As in what's really happening.

Folks fretting over oil pressure readings in days of yore is why the industry has had 'idiot lights' for decades, no?

You'd think if they were returning to using gauges (maybe because turbos?) they'd at least have a numeric value........

Toyota briefly got rid of the idiot gauges because of customer complaints and concerns. Voltage and oil pressure are always being questioned. Honestly my one vehicle has a broken oil gauge and I simply dont care, it either has it or doesnt.

another way of saying oil level / pressure has a large margin of error

Super interesting and helpful. Thanks man. It’s not a matter of more oil = more pressure.

I wonder why Carista doesn’t show oil PSI

It’s still an idiot light, just with a few bars that mean nothing…
I can’t say Toyota specific, but it will show normal range until it drops to a specified low minimum oil pressure rating. Let’s say 7 - 15 psi and then it’ll go from normal to zero.

I had to argue Weeks with an anal customer with a very expensive Shelby GT 350 type R some shit, very expensive Mustang. II had to argue Weeks with a anal customer with a very expensive Shelby GT 350 type R some shit, very expensive Mustang. I confirmed that under cold start his oil pressure gauge Red high in the vehicle, wouldn’t believe me that that needle position meant absolutely nothing in regards to what the vehicle engine was actually doing in regards to oil pressure.
If it doesn’t have a braided steel oil line from the engine to inside the cab, the oil gauge is nothing but an idiot light

But that’s kind of what brothers me given this dealership seems to overfill (I noticed it with my last truck and eventually dropped the issue) and so there’s no way for me to confirm electronically that it’s fine. If it just reads high on the dip, need to siphon.

I turned off the truck and took out the stick so the oil drains out of the tube for 15 min. About to check it now.

Has a Ford senior master engine tech for 30+ years, your statement isn’t completely accurate and always the case.
Yes, most green kids start on the lube rack, there’s always good and bad techs…
But I know many extremely great technicians that started on the blue rack and 35 years later, they are still on the lube rack and they are thorough and meticulous.

Also, no many senior technicians that have been in the field for 30 to 40 years doing engine work, transmission, work, brake specialist, etc. and cannot physically do the hard stuff anymore and they are on the lube rack. Also very good lube technicians….

but yes, if you’re going to encounter somebody green working on your car, chances are it will be in the lube department as we all have to start somewhere…
But even in the lube department, new green trainees work with somebody for six months before they are let loose at the dealership level, Learning the business, learning the do’s and don’ts and responsibilities, etc.
Learning from their mistakes and taking their door shots for screwing up, oh yeah, those days are over…:D

Overfilling or underfilling, it’s really not going to affect your oil pressure unless there’s literally only less than 1 quart in your engine. Let’s say, they overfilled it by two freaking qts , still will have no effect on your oil pressure.

i’m trying to be rude here, but if you seem to think they keep overfilling your truck, they show you otherwise, you eventually drop it, maybe it’s not them…
    just saying

The amount of oil in your engine has zero affect on your oil pressure, unless it’s so low your oil pump pick up screen is literally sucking up air, and oil pump is starving out the engine due to lack of volume

It's not an idiot light, but it's also not a gauge with numbers. I definitely see oil pressure higher on startup in the morning vs after driving and warming things up. I can sit at idle in neutral, and if I rev it up, the gauge shoes more bars. Definitely not an idiot light but not exact science with no numbers either.

Warm engine. Allowed oil to drain back into pan for 15 minutes. 2 readings showing both sides of the dip stick. For some reason one side always shows more (I assume because of engine camber). IMG_5463.jpg IMG_5464.jpg IMG_5465.jpg IMG_5466.jpg
