    Hello,

Recently acquired vehicle... My truck failed inspection today in NC. The truck was a farm truck in Oklahoma. The Evap system has been modified. Anyone have any idea what this oil filter is doing under the hood??

The hose goes back to the top of the gas tank. I don't want to drop the gas tank... Any idea what this is??

2018. I am wondering if just closing it off might solve the Evap problem..

I dunno, it almost looks like that might be a vent for the tank.

Looks like they deleted the air injection pump system with a bad charcoal canister assembly.
I hope you got this truck for a steal cause prepare to bend over…

That's quite an interesting setup you have there. I would love to know the story behind that. Glad I don't live where you have to have vehicle inspections, I imagine that could be a real pain with stuff like this. Hope you can get this sorted out on the cheap,O.P.!

Thanks. That helps. Is this something a repair shop could handle?

If the systems been butchered up to be cost prohibitive to return to stock, could you just install a generic charcoal canister like they used to use? I don't know anything about what is required for N.C. vehicle inspections, except no truck squatting, lol. I'm guessing it's a visual, along with having some sort of cel code for emission malfunction?

Nc inspector here. Even if you live in a non emissions county you still have to have all of the components associated with evaporative emissions control.

    If they understand the system,sure..
I just hope the wiring is there too.
    Emissions systems are very precise.
It will blow a code if you fart wrong.

Hind sight is 20/20 but no way would I have bought a farm vehicle and try to get it back on the road.
I do wish you the best of luck.

Print out the relevent parts diagrams and start comparing to your truck. This will tell you what is missing.

I can't imagine messing with any EVAP systems for the sake of an air compressor, unfortunately. Definitely something to with venting the gas tank if that's where it leads. I can't imagine wanting to add a vent (outside of OEM) for any reason tho... This has really piqued my curiosity. OP should call up the original owner if possible; I had to do that with a clapped out Jetta Vr6 I bought in my early 20's quite often.... lol

Yeah that's some quality redneck engineering right there! But I'm still scratching my head on what they were trying to accomplish (or what problem they were trying to solve). Maybe they were just trying to get it clear evap system related emission codes to pass an inspection?

If that is the vent for the fuel tank, my guess would be that the original filter/vent had clogged with dust and debris(you had mentioned farm truck) so that oil filter was Jerry rigged on as a replaceable evap vent/filter. I see a lot of this where I live. Farmers will find a way to work around and keep going. Gotta appreciate the ethic

Isn't the OEM vent in the filler neck/cap? I would imagine the engine bay gets dirtier than that area, even with farming? I don't farm though :notsure:

Thats a funny looking fuel filter.

On a serious note, I have very limited mechanical knowledge and know nothing about fuel systems. But is it actually just a fuel filter? Is it even possible to run a line to a filter off the tank using the existing electric fuel pump to "recirculate" the fuel? I could see someone DIY'ing something like this if they got crap in the fuel tank and didn't want to drop the tank. Not necessarily meant to be a fuel/water separator, but more of a "catch big chunks of shit" type of filter? Again, I don't know anything about anything; I'd assume that's what the existing fuel filter does :notsure:

Was there actually anything in the filter OP??
