All I can say is what in the hell is going on with Toyotas quality? I’ve been buying Toyotas since 1977 but I’m really concerned that they have lost their way lately.

Here's what I'm going to do since I can't get the bearing out. I'm removing the flap and the gear. Reinstalling the shaft back into the bearing. This should prevent the bearing from falling out and the shaft shouldn't move so that shouldn't break on me either.

I got my first Toyota in 1988 and they have all serviced me well without any major issues. Until 2012 when I had an engine issue at 148,000 miles oil changes done in time with quality oil.

Do all of the trucks having this broken shaft issue have anything in common such as an automatic transmission. The reason I ask is that the problem seems to occur at higher RPMs like when entering traffic at highway speeds with an engine speed above 4K rpm. Maybe I just misunderstood ???

The flap activates at 2400-2600 rpms

Yep this happened to me, running my truck up hill or over 4000rpm would make my truck go into Limp mode, after changing spark plugs, crankshaft sensor, cat sensors etc. but didn't fix the problem. I researched more and found this page, so using this video.

I removed the intake and shook it and heard the flap rattling inside. realizing I finally found the problem.

I find mind boggling that something as small as an actuator flap can brake but can't be repaired or replaced, and one would have to purchase the whole upper intake manifold plenum that brand new will cost $900 at the dealer and $650.00 at third party sellers.

so I hope this helps anyone with this Upper Intake manifold ( Toyota 17190-0P101 ) problem.

I found a used part for $275.00 here
    https://ahparts.com/search/2016/Toyota/TACOMA/intake-329/329/adbag

    Brand new here. $614.00 here
    https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem...(1=2GRFKS;4=SR5;6=6FC;7=DCB;0=GRN305L-PRTSHA)

watched this step by step video here

this costed me 314 total and the swap took me about an hour and a half. it was kinda easy, just pay attention to bolts and holes connections, other than that it wasn't too technical.

    hope this helps.

I realize this is a serious problem but - if the engine will run at the lower revs and then faults when you get into the higher range....... What happens if you fix the blade in place, after "ventilating" it a bit. If the flow change is too drastic to run well without it, how much of a bleed is needed to get by. I haven't seen enough of the housing interior to even daydream this - and I don't have the gadget on my truck (4.0) - but I'm curious if any backyard engineering has been tried.

Must not be the same part with the skinny little shaft - the failure face looks like torsion did it. Too small a diameter to deal with the oscillation induced by air flow? Vibration frequency?
Guess the correct thing to say is that my earlier engine must have a more rugged part. Its a 2014 and just looking through here - I don't see an earlier version reported to have failed.

I might be having the same issue. When I go uphill I hes
Hey bro gotta ask you something. When you went up hill on a freeway did it make a noise to like something is banging around Inside. If I go down hill my truck is okay but when I go uphill and put her under load I head a rattle like something is rattling inside if I force myself to gas it and next you know boom I went into limp mode (lose power and can’t accelerate) with the same issues as you. Had the same codes. Was wondering if you heard any noise too. But I had multiple cylinder misfires not just one.

    Hey,

I would like to check mine as I’m experiencing the exact same issue. I wonder if I can open it take a look at the valve and re install it without changing the air surge tank gasket?

I’m from Costa Rica and dealership does not have anything in stock -.- reason why I would like to take a look first so I can order the intake if needed (which will take at least 15 days and do not want to leave the car parked)

Does this issue affect any particular year?
