I'm close to being in your situation. I bought the biggest tank that would fit on my cart and I'm getting to the point where I need to start looking. Don't weld all that much now but they sure do come in handy when you need one.

 

fun work story time.

guy 1 at work isn't a good welder. guy 2 was a few tests short of being a fully certified welder before getting laid off--he's very good.

guy 1 asks guy 2 to run a vertical-down weld pass on a project.

guy 2 does the weld, and is so proud of how it turns out, he goes and grabs guy 3 to show him the awesome weld he just did.

only for guy 2 and 3 to come back to the area to find guy 1 grinding it down entirely flat.

guy 2 is still very angry about this. it was 6 months ago.

38 years is a long career in one company, it makes my 28 years journey seems a baby steps. Hang in there my friend, you are almost there at the finished line.

Good morning shop crew, hope your Saturday is a great and blessed one.

 

It’s the reality that’s hitting me.

Right now we’re debt free and socking away a good chunk of $$ every month. The numbers look ok for me to retire next year but I’m thinking about that savings every month.

That and the cost of healthcare. Cobra is a short term option but hugely expensive on a fixed income. I can get my medical insurance for a decent price but it doesn’t include medications or vision coverage. My current dental has a plan for retirees but they’re super secret about giving out info..

I wouldn’t qualify for SS for another 7 years though….

Lots of heady stuff but it’s Saturday so I’m gonna stop thinking about it

Realized it was Short Term Disability just before I hit delete.

No no no I was just thinking (thinking hurts) because Cobra is (was) 10x's higher than other. I had no income only my wife's SS.

 

Ugg, that's tough... It's crazy how it's done here. Our Canadian neighbors don't have to go through what we do..

Add: I understand about COBRA and it’s exorbitant costs. We won’t need to go that route. I’ll maintain my healthcare til medicare kicks for both of us. Then the cost of this drops significantly, pretty much becoming a medicare Part D (or whatever plan)
