Hey homies. Me and my Iraq brothers have been doing camping trips once a year, one of our guys brought up Lake Michigan for next year. We just did WV and want the same time of year. Do you guys have a good spot for vehicle camping? We’d like to be out there and secluded and good hiking and water to fish and fish fry. Thanks guys, looking for a good spot. I won’t give the coordinates. We are just a few Iraq bros that want to relax.

Not a lot of action with the MI crowd, look at the stickied threads above and see where the action is in the Midwest. I'm not at all familiar with lower MI, so I won't talk out of my ass on where to go. Not knowing what you're looking for, but you may really enjoy a trip to the UP. There are a lot of secluded, off-grid places to camp with great scenery and fishing. The Lake Superior area is spectacular.

One thing you will run into this time of year will be the remote campgrounds being closed and the weather being not-so-friendly.

Some of the WI crew are fairly well versed in areas of the UP.

I was surprised I didn’t see a thread for Michigan and the lakes. None of us have been there, but I think that’s the area for next year. We all are very capable so the most remote the better, but we definitely camp with the rigs. We definitely want fishing and I’m sorry, what’s the UP? I’m guessing upper peninsula? We deal with a lot of closers down here too.

If you LMK what month you’re planning on coming, what you like to fish for, and if you’re bringing a boat or not (and what type) I should be able to get ya hooked up with some nice secluded camp spots w/fishing. Just don’t ever mention em on the interwebs and I’ll send them to you via DM.

I’m useless for wheeling spots, but fishing as remote as you can find in the Great Lakes (Michigan based) is pretty much my 30 year passion.

Thank you and your buddies for your service!

So the area of the eastern UP that contains cool stuff like the Pictured Rocks, tahquamenon Falls, sand dunes in Gran Marais, whitefish point, also full of sugar maple and turn the best color in mid October. There are also Salmon in Lake Michigan that run up the rivers on both Peninsulas. (My first ever was caught in the Manistique River around this time of year) I camped all over the UP and never had any issues with the wolves, but the bears will come after your toothbrush! Invest in a bear canister! Good luck

My avatar is of a lake i was camping next to for work on Isle Royal. I’m not sure how late one can get the “barf barge” out there from Copper Harbor though… indelible impressions from that place!

I've never been to MI, but plan to visit next summer when it's warmer. Torch Lake has neat looking turquoise water.

Drummond Island probably sounds like a place that would hit your checklist. Hit up the Mitten state tours group on facebook. They know alot of good places. link below.

Shoot me a DM. I live in Northern Michigan near the Mackinac Bridge, and work for the US Forest Service, and worked specifically on the Hiawatha National Forest in the Eastern UP (Upper Peninsula). Let me know what you want to do, Dispersed camping, or campground? Boat or shore fishing? Fellow OIF/OEF vet here as well. Would love to help you all.

Michigan is awesome! Not just Lake Michigan but all the other smaller lakes around as well. I’ve spent a good amount of time out there over the years but not camping, so I don’t know much about that. As others have said my guess is either northern MI or the UP for more remote spots. Sounds like MSgt O has you covered. Have fun!

I’ve done the Lake Michigan Circle Tour a few times. Lots of videos and itineraries online. My wife and I spend a lot of time in the UP. If you want some seclusion and adventure, the Keweenaw is beautiful. There are rustic campgrounds around Marquette, which has a lot to do and a great party atmosphere. Pictured Rocks is beautiful, but campsites are expensive and usually full. Ontonogon is another great location with lakeside campsites. Fayette is an abandoned mining town that you can explore mainly unsupervised. Take the ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc with your own alcohol for a ghetto cruise experience. Great state for outdoor stuff!
