Good morning manly men, another day working on the GMC.

Getting closer to the finish line, rocker panels are welded in plus 1-1/2 cab corners -- that is when I ran out of MIG gas Friday.

With a little luck & determination by the end of the day there will be some paint going on this clunker.

I kinda am the oil man now.

Only work I hired out is when a line for one of the heaters sprung a pin hole leak Christmas day. I was able to get a guy out the next day and repair it. He showed me how to drain, fill, and purge the system. It'll happen again with the way the heat registers are. I can solder copper pipe fine, it was the drain and fill I was clueless on. That was a 2 hour and $500 lesson I'll remember the rest of my life

Yes, $500. $200 service call () $100 an hour, and $50 for one 3/4 coupling, elbow, and 1' of pipe

The burner set up is key, you just can't eyeball an oil burner, it needs to be done with gauges to hit the clean and efficient optimum.

At one point I was considering buying a Bacharach Fyrite kit, instead I just call a burner man with 50+ years using one.

 

This too is all boxed up and ready for the prize whse.

I think at this point I can eyeball it enough to keep it going for a couple more years. I want to eventually update to a propane boiler, so I got some years to save up for

I've never personally seen anybody use those fancy tools on boilers around here. Yes there's the C02 thing to worry about, I know. I've got a monitor right in there and it has never gone off "0".

The problem is you have never seen a professional set up an oil burner.

Damn near anybody with a passing understanding of how the burner works can change a nozzle, filter, electrodes & tinker with the air band and make it "work".

Doing an actual setup or efficiency test with the proper gauges, either an old style Fyrite kit or with modern digital ones is key to hitting that efficiency number and perhaps more important making the burner operate clean.

With an oil boiler the clean burn is especially important as the more the build up in the passages accumulated the more efficiency is lost and the faster more build up accumulates -- making the boiler fire longer which stresses the heat transfer surfaces (premature wear) and wasting your heating dollars.

Also cleaning one up that is all sooted up is a miserable, filthy job.

Here are some of the things tested for a proper tune up:

First: Remove all access covers brush clean & vac out all passages.
Inspect combustion chamber liner.
A proper "soot vac" is used, that crap will pass right through a regular shop vac.

Flue gas test:
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Oxygen (02)
Stack temperature - Too high is obviously dangerous, too low leaves deposits (condensation too) in the chimney and can break down masonry chimney liners over time.

Smoke test - reduces pollution & checks for correct combustion

Flue draft reading
Over fire draft reading
Inspect/adjust the barometric draft control

By the book a pump pressure test is also to be performed as it allows the calculation of the actual fuel delivered by the nozzle, although this is not usually done unless there is a problem.

Using all the above information the tech can now adjust the burner, obviously this is a balancing act between all adjustments and readings to achieve the end goal of a smooth light off, quiet operation and a clean burn.

So, just how does one eyeball all that?
