2015 owner seeking advice on buying 2023 vs 2024

That might be relevant if they were buying a Tundra.

 

Both of these things can be true at the same time, even if Toyotas actual reliability has declined over the years, which it has.

When I bought my 3rd gen, I just accepted with the number of cars they make and the complexity of newer cars, shit might go wrong. I can’t really think of another car / truck I want more. I’m in the same boat, I’ve owned all gen’s of Tacomas, plus 80s pickups and 4Runners and a bunch of Corollas, Prius. Still have been far more reliable than any ford, Chevy I’ve owned.

 

I had a 2023 trd off road manual transmission for 1 year and 1 month, 14k miles. It was totalled by an idiot.

As a replacement, I got a 2024 trd off road manual transmission, and I like it a lot more than my 2023. If this turbo 4 lasts it's a no brainer. I never said I loved my 2023, I liked it. I love my 2024.

What parts commonality does the Tacoma have with the tundra’s recall problems?

 

I’ve been looking at down sizing for a few years. Drove a few Jeeps, Canyon’s, and Colorado’s, wanted a Tacoma but the gen 3 power train was just too weak, and I couldn’t find a comfortable seating position. So decided to hold onto my Gen2 Tundra. Test drove a gen4 Tacoma, sold my Tundra and bought a Gen4 OR couldn’t be more pleased.

 

I was faced with the same decision. I totaled my 2012 that I loved. It was my third small Toyota truck with my first one being 1987 that I purchased new as a 19 year old.
I purchased a 2024 Tacoma Limited last week making it my fourth “little” Toyota truck and so far have zero regrets. The technology is amazing. The only complaint I have so far is that there is no place to hang a clothing rod. The two small hooks are forward facing and mounted above the rear glass. They can hold about one hanger. I promised myself that I wasn’t going to make any modifications but if I can determine that there are no wires etc and that there is enough support above the rear doors I may go to a junkyard and find some hooks that are acceptable color and mount them in my new truck. Just a small detail I overlooked during the test drive.

Other than that trivial personal preference I am loving the 2024 more than any other although I wish I still had my 1987 and had planned on keeping the 2012 for the rest of my life. Hopefully this 2024 will be my lifer.

 

4 months in I would call the automatic transmission another reason for the 2024. You can look up VIN to know if you risk the TSB and know Toyota is standing by their product.

Having had prior 4x4, manual and V6 engine families I'd not want what will scream in pain or hunt for gears when the gen 4 will leave those in your mirror. I'd not want what I considered a clearly inferior driver position. No way would I choose lesser safety when the gen 4 achieves the more stringent IIHS top safety pick. The gen 4 is incredibly quiet and the TSS 3 electronics are SAE autonomous driving level 3.

There's a just shy of 200 mi trip I've done countless times for 34 years now with 3 different pickups, 4Runner, sports car, luxury car and two different Siennas. It's city, twisty country back roads, up to 8 lane freeway... It struck me that on same trip my 2024 TRD OR is comfy and not fatiguing in same league as the premium Sienna and European luxury car. I'm also a MTB trail builder and ski area crew. Same pickup is about like a tractor for a recent trail related project.

 

I suspect there's so many holes in a dealer warranty that you could drop the entire solar system through it without touching the sides.

The answer is the same same in every one every one of these threads: If you think a trucks is unreliable and you feel it necessary to buy a warranty, then you're not buying the right truck.

You'll get a chance here shortly to compare a '24 model and a '25 model. If there's no urgency, and you still want Tacoma, go take a look.

The whole point of sales is to create stress, urgency, a need to complete the deal lest it never reappear again.

I can go out and buy the exact same truck I bought months ago for the same price I paid, which is nothing special, tomorrow.

Perhaps you can use this worry about the transmission to your benefit. Dealers were basically given tundras away near cost with .9% financing until Toyota announced the engine replacement. I still think the financing is very attractive on the tundra. if I had the space, I would own one. You get a lot more truck per dollar with a tundra.

 

You made me do it. Asking 2 AI assisted searches I see a major insurer says odds are 1 in 63 to hit a deer where I live. Earlier for my VIN and powertrain it was not a 1/2 percent that had the transmission TSB.

 

That's a good example of Toyota backing its products. Few of those engines have failed, and since some are beyond warranty–yet Toyota stepped up to the plate and decided to replace them. You'll not see that from GM, Stellantis and Ford.

^^^This^^^ Two Tacoma's in the family: A 2005 that had the frame replaced under the extended warranty program and is doing fine with no warning signs of deterioration; and my 2014 which was inspected per the Toyota program requirements in 2021 (and every year since) and now 10 years into the extended warranty program.

I have confidence/no doubts that they will replace the frame under the extended warranty if it develops a rust problem before first date in service in year 5/2026.

 

Regarding Gen4’s core merits as a truck (highway ride, handling, power delivery, packaging, tech, safety), l see universal praise from the people who actually paid their own money to buy one. Seems like a winner to own and use daily. Gen3 was a good looking, reliable truck that tended to polarize opinions as a daily driver.

These next-gen Tacoma’s may not technically end up being Toyota’s most robust, but Toyota will Kaizen their way through both the early QC garbage, and the more serious stuff. So I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over what may or may not break in 200k mi…just make sure you get a discount.

 

IMO, it's a relevant point regardless of what Toyota you are considering for purchase: Corolla base, Tacoma, Lexus LX, to Land Cruiser. Let Toyota work their Kiazen magic on the new Tacoma if you can, and wait for the '25 update and trade in the desirable last year '23 if you have to have one. ('25)

 

This is exactly correct. Everything has to be dealer serviced and maintenance schedule followed. This includes everything which adds up very quickly and is not really cost effective. Miss one and warranty is gone.

I am currently finishing a 500 mile round trip through the east tn / nc mountains. Most enjoyable ride over that route I have ever had.

 

Drive both and buy the one you like better.

It really does not to be more complicated than that. The 2024 has a warranty, and Toyota has a great reputation.

Other manufacturers are having similar issues. As long as they stand behind their product, Toyota will likely come out on top as they have for decades.

 

So, having recalls like their competition makes them come out on top?
Toyota has to stand behind their product to satisfy the warranty, they aren't doing anything special here.
